Nunes Says Obama State Dept. Passed Trump Dirt ‘to Very Strange Places’

Reported by Kathryn Blackhurst | Updated 07 Feb 2018 at 6:57 AM

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) said Tuesday on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” that former President Barack Obama’s State Department “was gathering information” on Donald Trump, his campaign and Russia in 2016 before “passing it to very strange places.”

Nunes — who is chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence — told host Laura Ingraham the committee’s investigation of allegations of Trump-Russia collusion includes three phases.

  • The first is the panel’s probe of surveillance abuse against Trump campaign volunteers by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI.
  • The second phase is a review of “irregularities” at the State Department,
  • and the third will be interviewing “the cast of characters.”

Phase one culminated with the release of a four-page summary memo, prepared by Nunes’ staff, describing the surveillance abuses. Those abuses were enabled by a dossier prepared by former British spy Christopher Steele and paid for by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign committee.

Nunes said the second phase is now moving forward.

“I can just tell you that the State Department was gathering information and then passing it to very strange places. That should not have happened,” Nunes told Ingraham, noting he could not divulge more information at that time.

“I will just say that there were comments over the weekend from people within the State Department that said [former Secretary of State] John Kerry had been briefed on the [Trump-Russia] dossier, that they had provided the new dossier, whatever this new dossier is, and they had provided it also to the FBI,” Nunes said.

“So, by people starting to talk about it, it seems to me like some people may be trying to distance themselves from the rest of the cast of characters involved,” he added.

Nunes’ comments came after Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) released a highly redacted copy of the criminal referral they sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recommending the potential prosecution of Steele. Wray made public a less-redacted version of the referral late Tuesday.

“It is a vindication of what we’ve been dealing with for the last five days, where we have been scolded that the dossier really played no part at all in the [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA] application. So clearly that’s not the case,” Nunes said of the referral.

Grassley and Graham’s referral revealed that Clinton campaign aides and former Obama appointees fed material to Steele as he compiled the dossier. The anti-Trump dossier was used by the FBI and DOJ to obtain warrants from the FISA court allowing the government to spy on Trump associates.

“Sadly, the mainstream media continues to ignore this. Even tonight I was looking. No one’s covering this,” Nunes said of Grassley and Graham’s referral, noting that “it’s pretty clear now you have the Clinton campaign, who was getting information from the Russians, dirt on Trump.”

Former U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Joseph diGenova also told Ingraham Tuesday that the Grassley-Graham memo “establishes beyond any doubt that the FBI knowingly deceived the FISA court about the information that it was presenting to them.”

DiGenova accused the FBI and DOJ of lying to the FISA court “about the fact that it was verified information — which it was not, which the law requires.”

“And now we know that additional Clinton allies, including Sidney Blumenthal, were involved in the transmission of false information, unverified information, to the FBI through State Department officials,” diGenova said. “Somebody’s gonna have to go to prison.”

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) implied Tuesday on Fox News’ “The Story” that Blumenthal fed a former State Department employee information used for Steele’s unverified Trump-Russia dossier.

If Clinton lost the election, then the FBI and DOJ sought “to frame Donald Trump and his associates with a false crime,” diGenova claimed.

“There is now no doubt whatsoever that the lawyers at the FBI and the lawyers at the Justice Department deceived, deceived FISA court knowingly,” diGenova said. “They had every reason in the world to believe that the information being provided was not only biased but completely unreliable. They didn’t care.

The FBI and DOJ “wanted the wiretaps, the intercepts and the electronic surveillance” because it was part of their “plan” to “exonerate” Clinton during the course of the investigation into her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state, diGenova said. If Clinton lost the election, then the FBI and DOJ sought “to frame Donald Trump and his associates with a false crime,” diGenova claimed.

“And they almost succeeded,” diGenova said. “And if she had won, they would have succeeded.”

Democrats And Republicans Unite To Rescind Last-Minute Obama Order Seeking Federal Election Takeover

All 50 state secretaries of state are urging the Trump administration to rescind a last-minute Department of Homeland Security directive calling state election systems “critical infrastructure.” Many state officials fear this is the first step toward a federal takeover of state-run elections, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned.

While deep political discord may be found on other issues, state secretaries — who oversee all election machinery — appear completely united against the former administration’s attempt to insert the federal government into state-run elections.

Then-Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson surprised and outraged state election officials with his Jan. 6 action, just two weeks before President-elect Donald Trump was to assume the presidency. Johnson tried to portray his move as part of the Obama administration’s effort against Russian government hacking of Democratic Party emails during the presidential campaign. But state officials retort that election machines and the infrastructure are not connected to the Internet and therefore are immune to cybersecurity attacks.partyof-deceit-spin-and-lies

Incoming DHS Secretary John Kelly indicated in written testimony prior to his confirmation he was troubled by Johnson’s directive.

“The notion that DHS can or should exercise some degree of influence over state voting systems is highly controversial and appears to be a political question beyond the scope of DHS’ current legislative cyber mandates,” Kelly wrote.

The National Association of Secretaries of State, which represent secretaries in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and American Samoa, is planning to take up the DHS action at its next full meeting. It is scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., in mid-February. Association president Denise Merrill, who also serves as the secretary of state for Connecticut, told TheDCNF in an interview, “I’m certain this will be a hot topic among all of us.”

Merrill confirmed the association and many secretaries of state have been in touch with Trump transition staff seeking revocation.

“I haven’t heard one Secretary of State — Democrat or Republican — that’s for this,” she said. Merrill is a Democrat.

Republican Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler, who served as the association’s immediate past president, urged Trump Jan. 11 to “direct the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to rescind the designation of state election systems as ‘critical infrastructure.’”

A DHS spokesman told TheDCNF he could not comment on a possible revocation by Kelly.

Johnson sent shockwaves through every state capital when he issued his official proclamation, stating, “I have determined that election infrastructure in this country should be designated as a subsector of the existing Government Facilities critical infrastructure sector.” He broadly put all state election facilities under the federal “critical infrastructure” purview. His designation would affect all state-operated polling places, centralized vote tabulations location, election storage facilities and IT systems holding voter registration databases.Oh good

He also angered state officials because the federal designation would exempt future election activities from public access via the Freedom of Information Act or from state open record laws.

“This something that came out of the blue,” noted Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp in an interview with TheDCNF. “They had never talked to any Secretaries of State or election officials around the country before the whole critical infrastructure designation came up. We were literally blindsided by this.”

“We thought we had turned the tide in convincing DHS that this was not the thing to do,” Schedler told TheDCNF. “It was very obvious to everyone — and it was nonpartisan, my Democratic colleagues were as against this as my Republican colleagues.”

“Suddenly, it was decided that they were going ahead with it and we didn’t get any notice and read about it in the paper,” Merrill recalled. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have some concern about it. It’s not a particularly partisan issue at this point.”

The association called the designation, “legally and historically unprecedented and raised questions for states and local governments about administration of the voting process.” Critics contend the action was part of a long-standing goal by progressive activists to “nationalize” future elections with a federal takeover.that-is

“There’s no denying what this looks like: a blatant move to politicize the election process,” wrote Heritage Foundation founder Edwin Feulner in a Jan. 16 opinion article.

Feulner, a staunch conservative, called Johnson’s action a “federal takeover” of state-run elections. “It’s a takeover ostensibly designed to address a nonexistent security threat — and in the process, ironically, make our elections less secure.”

Kemp agreed, saying, “I think that the Obama administration was interested in a universal or nationwide registration data base versus the states doing that. It was part of nationalizing elections which I think is a terrible idea.”

While the Obama administration tied its action to Russian hacking, election machinery is not connected to the Internet.

“All our equipment you actually vote on — the scanners or touch screens or whatever a state uses — are not connected to anything,” Merrill told TheDCNF. “They are not connected to the Internet. They’re not connected even to internal systems.”

“I don’t think they (DHS) understood the election process,” she added. “It’s not very cyber and I’m not sure they exactly understood that.”

Merrill also added that the hacking of the emails from the Democratic National Committee and of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta were not part of the government’s election systems.

“It was not a hacking of the election. It was a hacking of emails at the DNC which is NOT a government agency,” she added.

Support for the designation can be found among liberals and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Jan. 16, Rep. Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat who also is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, introduced legislation to support the designation.

“In the wake of the DNC server hack and well-documented efforts by states to suppress the vote, citizens are rightly concerned,” Johnson stated when he introduced the bill.

State Department-Funded Nonprofit That John Kerry Had ‘No Role’ In Was Founded In His Home

A nonprofit created in Secretary of State John Kerry’s upscale Boston home and managed by his daughter Vanessa Kerry has received more than $9 million from the Department of State, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation has found.Partyof Deceit Spin and Lies

Seed Global Health was founded at 19 Louisburg Sq in Boston’s Beacon Hill, tax forms indicate. News reports show that’s Kerry’s home address, which Zillow estimates is worth nearly $18 million. Kerry’s wife, Teresa, is an heir to the Heinz family fortune.

Beacon Hill is the most expensive block in Boston, with median home values estimated at $6.7 million in 2015, a Boston Globe affiliate reported. The Boston Business Journal ranked Kerry’s house the third most valuable home in the city in 2013.

The Department of State has funneled more than $9 million through the Peace Corps to Seed since 2012, TheDCNF previously revealed. The money is awarded under the Global Health Service Partnership (GHSP) – a Peace Corps-run and State Department-funded program that Vanessa Kerry created in conjunction with officials from both agencies.Partyof Deceit Spin and Lies

Seed has never been required to compete with other organizations for the funding. It recruits medical volunteers for overseas service.

“As we have made clear, Secretary Kerry played no role in this decision making while in the Senate or subsequently while at the State Department,” Department of State spokesman John Kirby told TheDCNF. “There was – and remains – no conflict of interest here.”Leftist Propagandist

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton headed the Department of State when Seed formed and received its initial public funding in 2012. John Kerry chaired the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations as a democratic senator representing Massachusetts. That panel has oversight of both the Department of State and the Peace Corps.

Seed eventually moved into a Massachusetts General Hospital office – Dr. Kerry’s primary employer – tax forms show. Her father replaced Clinton as secretary of state in February 2013.

The Department of State funded an extension for Seed’s contract in 2015, even though the nonprofit couldn’t meet the original agreement’s terms. John Kerry announced GHSP’s State Department-funded expansion at a December 2014 event, and even bragged about the partnership between the Peace Corps and his daughter’s nonprofit. Neither the Peace Corps nor Seed responded to requests from TheDCNF for comment.Partyof Deceit Spin and Lies
