White House, GOP Lawmakers Struggle to Define Syrian End Game. Republicans in Congress divided on regime change, administration slow to clarify mission

Reported by Jim Stinson | Updated 10 Apr 2017 at 7:57 AM

URL of the original posting site: http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/white-house-gop-lawmakers-struggle-to-define-syrian-end-game/

Four days after President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike on the Syrian air base that reportedly launched a chemical attack on civilians, it remains unclear if the White House is committed to toppling President Bashar al-Assad or is seeking an alternate end game.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), speaking to LifeZette and other reporters just before the bombing began , said he thought Trump was on the right path by condemning the chemical attack at a joint press conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Wednesday. At the time Rubio was speaking, it was not known to the world that Trump had made the decision to attack the air base in Homs province, where it is believed the planes that dropped chemical weapons, near the town of Khan Shaykhun in a rebel-held area in northwest Syria, originated. But Trump’s words alone impressed the Florida senator.

“I think we’ll look back at yesterday as one of the moments where his presidency evolved in what I believe is a stronger direction,” said Rubio, speaking to reporters on his way back to his office on Thursday.

Rubio told reporters in the Capitol that he wanted more than just symbolic action. So far, some could say that is all that has been accomplished. Rubio said at a minimum, he wants Assad’s ability to launch attacks on civilians “degraded.” Rubio also said he wants an international coalition to strip Assad of such abilities.

And while the Tomahawk missiles employed by the U.S. Navy likely caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to the Syrian military, Assad remains in power. Some leaders clearly desire regime change in Syria.

And on Sunday, Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told CNN that the White House has “multiple priorities.”

“Getting Assad out is not the only priority,” Haley told Jake Tapper of CNN. “So what we’re trying to do is obviously defeat ISIS. Secondly, we don’t see a peaceful Syria with Assad in there. Thirdly, get the Iranian influence out. And then finally move towards a political solution, because at the end of the day this is a complicated situation, there are no easy answers, and a political solution is going to have to happen.”

But it is what she said next that put her in conflict with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

“If you look at his actions, if you look at the situation, it’s going to be hard to see a government that’s peaceful and stable with Assad,” Haley said. “Regime change is something that we think is going to happen because all of the parties are going to see that Assad is not the leader that needs to be taking place for Syria.”

That clashed with Tillerson’s finesse on CBS News on Sunday. Tillerson told CBS News that the administration wants to focus on ISIS and then come back to ensuring a more peaceful Syria. He didn’t mention regime change.

Regime change is also opposed by Russia, a close ally of Syria. The Russian embassy in the United Kingdom tweeted out an ominous question about “real war” breaking out in Syria. The embassy also said Russia supports the leadership in Damascus to prevent ISIS from taking control of Syria.

A long-term war with the Syrian government, ending in regime change, is not entirely welcome in Congress, even if an international coalition takes up the fight. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) told reporters on Thursday that the bombing by the United States was unconstitutional because the United States was not attacked. Paul wants an official declaration of war before action is taken.

“We’ve had no authorization of war against ISIS or anyone else for 15 years,” said Paul.

Complicating the matters for White House policy is that Syrian Christians prefer the protection of Assad against jihadists, said Paul.

Paul told LifeZette he is horrified by the images he sees after Assad attacks civilians, but he is not sure U.S. attacks are the answer. And Paul said the United States may not like a new regime in Syria.

“Is there an end to the progression of regime change in the Middle East?” Paul asked on Friday before an impromptu news conference in the Capitol.

Senate confirms Gorsuch to Supreme Court, giving Trump big win

The Senate on Friday confirmed Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, giving President Trump the biggest victory of his first 100 days in office. The 54-45 vote caps a bitter political battle that began with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia more than a year ago and resulted in the Senate triggering the “nuclear option,” breaking Democrats’ blockade and ending filibusters for Supreme Court nominees.

Three Democrats facing reelection next year in strongly pro-Trump states voted for Gorsuch: Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), and Joe Donnelly (Ind.).

But two Democrats facing reelection in 2018 in states Trump won by double digits — Sens. Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Jon Tester (Mont.) — voted no, a reflection of Trump’s slumping approval rating among independents and the boiling rage of the Democratic base over his 2016 electoral victory.

Gorsuch will be sworn in as the Supreme Court’s 101st associate justice on Monday.

Chief Justice John Roberts is set to administer the Constitutional Oath in a private ceremony at 9 a.m., and Justice Anthony Kennedy will administer the oath at a public ceremony at the White House later in the morning.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said the fight will leave a scorch mark on the Senate because Republicans employed the nuclear option.

“It will make this body a more partisan place. It will make the cooling saucer of the Senate considerably hotter, and I believe it will make the Supreme Court more of a partisan place,” Schumer said on the Senate floor Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), however, argued that the change to the filibuster, which Republicans made with a party-line vote Thursday, would restore the Senate to its tradition of not filibustering judicial nominees.

He praised Gorsuch’s credentials Friday as “sterling,” his record as “excellent” and his judicial temperament as “ideal.” He said he wished “that important aspects of this process had played out differently” but held out hope that “today is a new day” and that Democrats would not hold a grudge as the chamber considers other priorities this year.

“I hope my Democratic friends will take this moment to reflect and perhaps consider a turning point in their outlook going forward,” he said.

Some Democrats questioned whether it was worth getting into a showdown with McConnell over Gorsuch and losing their power to filibuster future Supreme Court nominees. These few dissenters thought it might be tougher for Republicans to change the rules if a swing seat on the court became open later on in Trump’s term, when he might have less political capital.  Democratic leaders, however, disagreed, arguing that McConnell would be just as likely like to change the rules in the future.

Democrats tried to block Gorsuch because they said his rulings tended to favor powerful interests over average people and also because they were still furious over Republicans’ treatment of Merrick Garland, whom President Obama nominated a year ago to fill the vacancy left by Scalia.

McConnell announced immediately after Scalia’s death that Garland would not receive consideration by the GOP-controlled Senate and that the winner of the presidential election should pick the nominee. Democrats argued that decision broke 230 years of precedent and would best be remedied by Gorsuch withdrawing and Trump picking a “more mainstream candidate.”

That proposal went nowhere as Republicans argued that Trump made clear during last year’s campaign that he would pick a judge from a list of 21 conservatives, on which Gorsuch was included.

A CNN exit poll showed that 56 percent of Trump voters said the Supreme Court was “the important factor” in their votes, and 46 percent said it was “an important factor.”

Gorsuch isn’t likely to change the most recent ideological balance of the court as he replaces one of its most outspoken and conservative jurists. He called Scalia a “mentor” at his confirmation hearings and, like his predecessor did, takes an “originalist” approach to the law meant to hew to the intentions of the Founding Fathers and follow legal language strictly. That approach became a sticking point for Democrats, who criticized him for relying on what they called overly literal readings of the law to decide in favor of those in power, such as a trucking company in TransAm Trucking v. Administrative Review Board that fired a driver who refused to stay for hours with a disabled vehicle in freezing weather.

Republicans countered by touting Gorsuch’s academic and professional credentials; his clerkships with two Supreme Court justices, Anthony Kennedy and Byron White; his unanimous rating of well-qualified by the American Bar Association; and his record of deciding with the majority in 99 percent of the cases he heard.

Gorsuch appeared poised to sail through the Senate as Democrats earlier this year were more focused on Trump’s more controversial Cabinet appointees, such as Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Democrats had failed to dig up any seriously damaging writings, statements or indiscretions, and even Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the most liberal justice on the high court, said Gorsuch was “very easy to get along with.”

The lack of strong early resistance angered liberal groups, including NARAL Pro-Choice America, MoveOn.Org and the Services Employee International Union, which wrote a stern letter to Democratic senators early last month exhorting them to “do better.” The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative group backing Gorsuch, countered pressure from the left by launching a $10 million advertising campaign to bolster his nomination. The National Rifle Association also poured in $1 million to help Gorsuch.

It became apparent Monday,  when several Democrats who were on the fence came out against his nomination, that Gorsuch would not win confirmation unless Republicans moved to eliminate the filibuster. By Monday evening, 42 Democrats and one Independent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.), had announced they would block the final vote. McConnell announced the next day that he had the votes to trigger the nuclear option.

Vice President Pence presided over the vote. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), who recently underwent back surgery, missed it.

Three Major Atrocities U.S. Declined to Stop. Assad chemical attack spurs President Trump to choose intervention, launch military strike

Reported by Jim Stinson | Updated 07 Apr 2017 at 6:33 AM

URL of the original posting site: http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/three-major-atrocities-u-s-declined-to-stop/

On Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson surprised the world by saying “steps are underway” to consider removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power. Later Thursday night, President Donald Trump authorized a U.S. missile strike against a Syrian government target.

Assad is blamed for launching a Tuesday chemical attack on Syrian civilians in the city of Idlib in northwest Syria, near the Turkish border. Trump condemned the attack without hesitation as he spoke in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday, with Jordanian King Abdullah II by his side.

“Yesterday’s chemical attack, a chemical attack that was so horrific in Syria against innocent people, including women, small children and even beautiful little babies, their deaths were an affront to humanity,” said Trump.

Trump said Assad’s chemical attack crossed many lines. In saying that, Trump used a metaphor similar to former President Barack Obama’s “red line” warning to Syria in 2013. It demonstrated Trump wasn’t afraid of being seen of drawing a line, but failing to act later.

But in acting, Trump has re-engaged the United States in a region where he has promised to prevent the nation from being drawn into another bloody quagmire. Trump has many long-term options, of course. He can lead a coalition of bombing attacks like the one that toppled Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. That brief series of coalition attacks required no U.S. ground troops and did achieve regime change. Or a coalition can more aggressively invade Syria, as the United States and partners did to Iraq in 2003.

That latter option is already roiling the political waters, as it did in 2013. Trump supporters are waging an aggressive campaign online to talk the president out of any kind of war with Assad, even as missiles started flying. The argument that critics of intervention could make is that the United States is under no obligation to be the world’s policeman. While the United States often regrets standing completely idle during atrocities, it has done so — quite often.

Rwanda 1994

In 1994, demoralized by a failure to change things after intervention in Somalia in late 1992, the United States stood down while genocide raged in Rwanda, in southeast Africa. In just 100 days, ethnic Hutu extremists slaughtered about 800,000 people in Rwanda, according to BBC. Canada and a few other nations wanted action. But nothing seemed to stir the U.N. or the U.S.

Part of the reason was U.S. politics and the hot 1994 elections, which gave the GOP the House for the first time since 1954. President Bill Clinton was worried about the Somali experience in 1993, in which U.S. soldiers were killed trying to intervene in that troubled African nation’s problems.

Clinton’s advisers also hesitated at calling the killings “genocide.” According to State Department officials, a young Clinton aide named Susan Rice expressed fear in a private meeting that “if we use the word ‘genocide’ and are seen as doing nothing, what will be the effect on the November [congressional] election?”

Rice has said she cannot recall the remark. She would later become President Obama’s national security adviser. Preventing the 100-day genocide is one of Clinton’s biggest regrets.

The Congo 1998 – ?

The Rwanda genocide resulted in massive problems for its western neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the nation formerly known as Zaire.

Beginning during the war of 1998-2002, conflict has taken more than 5.4 million lives since 1998. Most perished from disease and malnutrition, according to the International Rescue Committee. Despite the severe death toll, which far exceeds that of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, Clinton and former President George W. Bush never moved to substantially get involved.

The D.R. of Congo still has massive problems, according to the committee.

Cambodia 1975 – 1979

After reaching a peace agreement with North Vietnam and then abandoning South Vietnam in 1975 (by cutting off aid), the United States had no motivation to engage further against the bad guys in Southeast Asia. And as usual, the timing of genocidal maniacs was perfect. In this case, the dictator was Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge, which ran Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.

During the Khmer Rouge reign, at least 1.5 million Cambodians died of starvation, execution, disease, or overwork, according to The History Channel. The U.S. and the U.N. stood back during the reign of terror.

In a twist, it was a then-recent U.S. enemy, Vietnam, which ended Pol Pot’s tenure by invading in 1979 and sending Pol Pot into the jungle, where he died in 1998.

Trump Strike Brings Risk of Entanglement or ‘Red Line’ Moment. Initial intervention could force expanded U.S. role in messy Syrian conflict

Reported by Brendan Kirby | Updated 07 Apr 2017 at 8:29 AM

URL of the original posting site: http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/trump-still-risks-of-red-line-moment-after-syrian-strike/

In deciding on a missile strike against Syria on Thursday, President Donald Trump is still at risk of creating his own “red line” moment, according to foreign policy experts from across the political spectrum. Trump took the first step Thursday night, launching 50 to 60 Tomahawk cruise missiles at an air base in Syria. That came hours after the president told reporters on Air Force One, “something should happen.”

After an initial low-key response to reports that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used suspected sarin gas to kill at least 70 people, Trump surprised observers by how forcefully he condemned the regime during a joint appearance Wednesday at the White House Rose Garden with Jordanian King Abdullah II.

It crossed a lot of lines for me,” he said. “When you kill innocent children, innocent babies … with a chemical gas that is so lethal — people were shocked to hear what gas it was — that crosses many, many lines.”

To some, that sounds a lot like former President Barack Obama’s infamous declaration in August 2012 that the use of chemical weapons would cross a “red line.” But after Syrians did, in fact, use sarin gas a year later to kill some 1,400 people outside of Damascus. Obama opted against military action. Instead, he negotiated a deal with Syria and Russian President Vladimir Putin in which Assad agreed to get rid of his chemical weapons stockpile — an agreement it now seems he failed to honor. Obama’s critics ever since have argued that American credibility took a hit as a result.

Experts who spoke to LifeZette before Thursday’s missile strike described the risk of venturing into the messy Syrian civil war. John Glaser, associate director of foreign policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, said that leaders usually draw red lines to deter actions, not respond to them.

“He [Trump] issued this kind of awkward post-hoc red line,” he said. “In that sense, it was kind of nonsensical and not strategic.

Dramatic Reversal?

Military action in Syria represents a dramatic reversal of one of Trump’s core campaign pledges — avoiding entanglement in the Middle East. He promised to focus on narrow engagement designed to take out the Islamic State terrorist organization but steer clear of long, open-ended military operations such as Iraq and Afghanistan. He even suggested that Russia could be an ally in the region.

Robert Kaufman, a Pepperdine University political science professor and a foreign-policy hawk who was highly critical of Obama, said Trump needs to develop clear policy goals and remain vague until he decides what steps to take.

“It’s very important not to issue a red line unless you’re going to deliver on it,” he said. “He needs to be very careful of that … I would cultivate ambiguity.”

Wading into Syria is fraught with peril, according to experts, who agreed that removing Assad from power without an unlikely diplomatic solution could not reasonably be accomplished without committing tens of thousands of soldiers and a willingness to stick around for a long-term occupation.

What’s more, experts warn, fighting against the Assad regime risks a confrontation with Russia — which already has troops fighting on the side of the government and has deep ties in the country.

“The problem with Syria is that there are no good outcomes,” said Ariel Cohen, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

Complicating matters is that the Syrian civil war has multiple competing and overlapping factions, he said. Fighting Assad could result in strengthening ISIS and rebranded al-Qaida factions that are fighting alongside U.S.-backed rebels.

Cohen said the opposite strategy has the reverse perils.

“What is our preferred outcome? Is it fighting ISIS only?” he asked. “That would de facto … put us on the same side with people we don’t want to be on the same side with.”

‘Not The Muscle for the Arab Regimes’

Cohen said one option would be to organize an expeditionary force of friendly Arab counties to do the fighting on the ground, with U.S. air support. But he said that has risks as well.

“We need to very clearly understand where our interests lie and separate them from Arab interests,” he said. “We are not the muscle for the Arab regimes.”

Kaufman, author of “Dangerous Doctrine: How Obama’s Grand Strategy Weakened America,” said Trump has more limited options. He said the president could, for instance, destroy Syria’s air force. That would send a message to both to Assad and Putin, while at the same time undermining domestic allegations of Trump’s supposed Russia ties.

“This could be a two for one for him,” he said.

But Glaser, the Cato scholar, said limited military action is unlikely to change the Syrian regime’s behavior. What’s more, he said, “mission creep” eventually could pull America deeper into the quagmire. A larger military commitment “very likely would exacerbate the humanitarian suffering” that provoked the response in the first place, he added.

Glaser said it is worrying the Trump appears to be backtracking on his campaign promises and boxing himself in. And he warned of unintended consequences.

“If you succeeded in bombing the regime out of existence, the problem is a massive power vacuum that results,” he said.

And virulently anti-American interests could fill that vacuum, Glaser said.

Cohen said Trump should study Obama’s missteps carefully before committing to action.

“They say that smart people learn from the mistakes of others, and stupid people learn from their own,” he said. “I think that the president will learn from President Obama’s mistakes and not box himself in.”

Senate goes ‘nuclear’ to advance Trump Supreme Court pick

The Senate voted Thursday to move forward with Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination after Republicans took a historic step that lowers the vote threshold for high court nominees to a simple majority.  Senators voted 55-45 to end debate on Gorsuch’s nomination, setting up a final confirmation vote for Friday. Thanks to a procedural move that changed Senate rules earlier Thursday, a simple majority was needed to move forward.

Democrats had successfully blocked Gorsuch’s nomination from getting 60 votes earlier, prompting Republicans to employ the “nuclear option,” which effectively ends filibusters for all Supreme Court nominees. Democrats tried to delay the rule change vote by offering motions to postpone a vote and to adjourn the chamber, but both fell short as Republicans stayed unified.

Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) voted with Republicans to allow President Trump’s pick to move forward.

Republicans defended the party-line vote on the nuclear option, saying Democrats were to blame for blocking Gorsuch, who they believe is eminently qualified to sit on the Supreme Court.Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) argued that Democrats should “come to their senses.”

“The truth of the matter is that throughout this process, the minority led by their leader has been desperately searching for a justification for their preplanned filibuster,” he said ahead of Thursday’s votes.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) added that the current stalemate was part of a decades-long Democratic effort to “politicize the courts and the confirmation process.”

“The opposition to this particular nominee is more about the man that nominated him and the party he represents than the nominee himself,” he said.

Republicans hinted for weeks that Trump’s nominee would be confirmed one way or another. McConnell confirmed during a leadership press conference that he had the votes to go nuclear if needed. Republicans appeared resigned to the tactics, arguing if Democrats won’t support Gorsuch — who received the American Bar Association’s highest rating — they won’t allow any GOP nominee to join the Supreme Court.

But Democrats made a last-minute pledge for Republicans to back down and change the nominee, an argument that never gained traction with GOP senators.

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said. “When a nominee doesn’t get enough votes for confirmation the answer is not to change the rules, it’s to change the nominee.”

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) during an eleventh-hour press conference blasted the GOP tactics, saying it “is just wrong to pack the court through this stolen seat.”

“That’s why it’s so important that we still in the few hours that we have left hopefully stop this really crime against the Constitution,” he said.

Progressives groups also stepped up their attacks heading into Thursday’s vote, warning that Republicans will be to blame for going “nuclear.”  The People’s Defense — a coalition of roughly a dozen progressive groups led by NARAL Pro-Choice America — released a digital ad campaign targeting Republicans in Arizona, Alaska, Maine, Nevada and South Carolina, warning them that “history is watching.”

Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Dean Heller (Nev.), among those being targeted by outside groups, are Republicans’ two most vulnerable incumbents. Schumer echoed that from the Senate floor on Thursday, saying that Republicans “had other choices. They’ve chosen this one.”

“The responsibility for changing the rules will fall on Republicans and Leader McConnell’s shoulders,” he said.

Democrats remain deeply bitter of Republicans treatment of Merrick Garland, whom former President Barack Obama’s nominated to fill the vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in February 2016. GOP leaders refused to give Garland a hearing or a vote. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) argued that the current stalemate over the Supreme Court dates back Scalia’s death and “what we’re facing today is the fallout.”

But the hardball tactics drew skepticism from both Republican and Democratic senators, who held around-the-clock negotiations to try to prevent the rule change but ultimately failed.

Told that by a reporter that some people think the Senate will function better without the filibuster, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) fired back: “Whoever said that is a stupid idiot.”

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) also warned that without the need for 60 votes to break a filibuster, Trump might easily appoint Attorney General Jeff Sessions or EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to the Supreme Court in the future.

“Partisanship should give way to patriotism,” said Bennet, who backed ending debate on Gorsuch’s nomination earlier Thursday but voted against it in the second vote. “If we go down this road we will undermine the minorities ability to check this administration and all those who follow.”

Five Biggest Issues Looming Over Xi Visit. The likely — and likely uncomfortable — topics of conversation for Sunshine Summit

Reported by Edmund Kozak | Updated 06 Apr 2017 at 8:03 AM

URL of the original posting site: http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/five-biggest-issues-looming-over-xi-visit/

From China’s alleged cheating in the global marketplace, to expansion of its military presence in the South China Sea, to President Donald Trump’s threats of giving nuclear weapons to Japan, the American president and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will have no shortage of touchy topics to broach.

Indeed, the meeting “will be a very difficult one,” Trump tweeted last week. Here are the five most important issues the two leaders could confront when they meet in Florida this week at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

North Korea

North Korea is certain to be a topic of conversation between Trump and Xi. The rogue Communist dictatorship has been a frequent target of Trump’s ire — both before and after the election.

“North Korea is behaving very badly,” Trump tweeted in March. “They have been ‘playing’ the United States for years. China has done little to help!”

According to various reports, White House sources have claimed that Trump intends to use the U.S.-China trade relationship — which greatly benefits China — as leverage in order to pressure the Chinese into using their own relationship with North Korea to rein in the isolated dictatorship’s nuclear aggression.

It is obvious that the Trump Administration has absolutely no patience for North Korea’s antics. Rex Tillerson’s statement issued Wednesday, following North Korea’s launching of a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, made that clear.

“The U.S. has spoken enough about North Korea,” Tillerson said, “We have no further comment.”

Currency Manipulation

“Well they, I think [the Chinese are] grand champions at manipulation of currency. So I haven’t held back,” Trump said in February. “We’ll see what happens.” Indeed, Trump campaigned in part on the promise to “get tough” with China, and specifically said he would designate them as currency manipulators.

Given the timing of the meeting, however, if the subject does come up, it is likely to do so only in passing and will remain unsettled. When asked in February if the Treasury was planning on designating China as a currency manipulator, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that he would follow the department’s standard methods when it came to analyzing trading partners’ currency practices.

Those standard methods are reports on said practices which the department must publish twice a year — on April 15 and October 15. If the Trump administration does intend to designate China a currency manipulator, the world will know when the first report is published — just over a week from the Trump-Xi summit.

Trade Deficits

Another issue sure to come up is the United States’ massive trade deficits with China, another topic Trump brought up frequently while campaigning, and one which he has taken a marked interest in addressing.

“We can no longer have massive trade deficits and job losses,” Trump tweeted last Thursday.

And indeed, on Friday Trump issued two executive orders that will begin a three-month investigation into the causes of the country’s trade deficits on a country-by-country basis. China, along with Japan and Canada, was named in the orders specifically.

South China Sea

Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea is another area of contention between the two nations that is sure to crop up during the Sunshine Summit. Emboldened by the perceived weakness of the Obama administration, the Chinese began an aggressive campaign of artificial-island building in the South China Sea, a region they believe to be rightfully their territory.

“We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that first, the island-building stops, and second, your access to those islands is also not going to be allowed,” said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during his confirmation hearing in January.

So far seven islands have been built in the region’s Spratly island chain. In April of last year, the Chinese landed a military plane on one of these islands, Fiery Cross Reef, in what was widely seen as a not-so-subtle assertion of power.

While the Chinese government maintains the islands are not aggressive in purpose, nor designed for military use, Fiery Cross Reef has a 10,000 foot-long runway — more than large enough to support long-range bombers. Needless to say, American allies in the region are getting nervous.

East China Sea

Unfortunately the South China Sea isn’t the only powder-keg in the region. The East China Sea is equally prone to become a region of open conflict, if not more so, due to a long-running dispute between China and Japan.

The Senkaku Islands, an uninhabited island chain that lies just 90 miles north of the Japanese island of Ishigaki, is currently Japanese territory but has long been claimed by China. China has been steadily escalating its aggression in the region for some time. The number of Japanese intercepts of Chinese aircraft has increased each year since 2008 — there were over 640 such intercepts between April and December of last year. Given the United States’ treaty obligations to Japan, a conflict between China and Japan over the Senkaku Islands stands a very real chance of escalating into a significant war.

Transportation tax hikes an insult to taxpayers

It’s easy to spend money when it’s not your own.  That’s the case with the proposed massive tax hikes on California drivers announced

Reported by Jon Coupal | Wednesday April 5, 2017

Subject: Gov. Jerry Brown.

The $5.2 billion in taxes imposed annually are aimed squarely at the middle class — citizens who see their cars not as a luxury but as a necessity to get to work, take the kids to school and run their errands at the end of a long day.  The governor and his tax-and-spend allies — including interests that get rich off the taxpayer dime — are pushing a gas tax hike of 12 cents per gallon on top of our already high gas tax plus higher vehicle registration fees that average out to about $50 per vehicle

Not surprisingly, taxpayers are not buying what the governor is selling.  A Public Policy Institute of California poll shows that a majority of Californians, including 42 percent of Democrats, oppose the taxes.  A recent California Chamber of Commerce poll showed that 80 percent of voters want to see spending reforms first, before new taxes.

There is a good reason for the lack of trust between the people and their government when it comes to transportation spending. General fund spending has increased by $36 billion over the last six years, and not one dime has been spent on transportation infrastructure. If legislators don’t view transportation as a critical priority, why should California drivers support even higher taxes?

The Ann Coulter Letter: The Russian Emperor’s New Clothes

Commentary by  Ann Coulter  |

URL of the original posting site: http://humanevents.com/2017/04/05/the-russian-emperors-new-clothes/

The Susan Rice bombshell at least explains why the Democrats won’t stop babbling about Russia. They need a false flag to justify using national intelligence agencies to snoop on the Trump team. Every serious person who has tried to locate any evidence that Russia attempted to influence the 2016 election — even Trump-haters at the New York Review of Books and Rolling Stone magazine — has come away empty-handed and angry. We keep getting bald assertions, unadorned with anything resembling a fact.

But for now, let’s just consider the raw plausibility of the story.

The fact-less claim is that

(1) the Russians wanted Donald Trump to win; and

(2) They thought they could help him win by releasing purloined emails from the Democratic National Committee showing that the Democrats were conspiring against Hillary Clinton’s primary opponent, Bernie Sanders.

First, why on earth would Russia prefer a loose cannon, untested president like Trump to an utterly corrupt politician, who’d already shown she could be bought? The more corrupt you think Russia is, the more Putin ought to love Hillary as president.

The Russians knew Hillary was a joke from her ridiculous “reset” button as secretary of state. They proceeded to acquire 20 percent of America’s uranium production, under Hillary’s careful management in exchange for a half-million-dollar speaking engagement for her husband and millions of dollars in donations to the Clinton Foundation.

(Politifact rates this claim FALSE! — LIAR, LIAR PANTS ON FIRE! — because Trump referred to 20 percent of America’s “uranium,” not to 20 percent of America’s “uranium capacity.” This is the sort of serious reporting we get from our watchdog media.)

The last thing our enemies want is unpredictability in an American president, and Trump is nothing if not unpredictable. Actually, that’s only the second-to-last thing Putin wants. Russia’s only export is energy: The last thing Putin wants is a president who vows to drill and frack, driving down the world oil price.

But let’s say the Russians were morally offended by a woman who could be bought (by them) for a $500,000 speaking fee, and what they really longed for was a bellicose American president promising to put our interests first.

Why would anyone, least of all trained spies, think that it would help Trump to release emails showing the DNC had its thumb on the scale against Bernie Sanders? How was that supposed to work again? I forget.

Accepting everything else the most deranged Trump-hater believes, normal people lose the thread of the conspiracy at the moment when the Russians are supposed to have said to themselves, “HEY, I KNOW — LET’S TRY THIS!”

Even experts in American politics haven’t the first idea how to affect an election. The best minds of the GOP bet $140 million of their own money that Jeb! would be the nominee. (Maybe they should have hired Putin.)

Throughout the primaries, Democrats were openly praying that the GOP would nominate Trump. Democrats had the same hope in 1980 for Ronald Reagan. In 2008, Republicans hooted at the idea of Al Franken running for the U.S. Senate.

Days before the election, America’s premier journal of liberal opinion, The New York Times, gave Hillary a 91 percent chance of winning. The Princeton Election Consortium calculated her chances at 99 percent. The Huffington Post’s polling aggregator put Hillary’s odds at 98 percent.

But we’re supposed to believe that a country practiced in spy craft was confident that it not only knew what was likely to happen in a U.S. presidential election, but also knew how to swing it? And no one in Moscow thought to ask: “What will be the predictable, certain outcome of releasing the DNC’s ‘Get Bernie’ emails?”

The DNC leaks might have ended up being the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats. What if they had pulled a Torricelli, and forced Hillary to drop out, so they could run Joe Biden instead? Biden is a lot more popular than Hillary!

Isn’t the more logical leaker someone within the DNC who’d had enough with David Brock and Debbie Wasserman Schultz steering the party into a ditch? The actual leaker probably thought: I’ve got to save the party! She’s going to destroy us!

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, as well as his associate, former British ambassador Craig Murray, both say that the DNC emails came from a whistleblower within the DNC. Murray has even identified the precise location where a DNC insider passed him the emails — a park near American University. Assange may be a misguided zealot, but neither his friends nor his enemies call him a liar. His image is very nearly the opposite: a self-righteousness fanatic — not a slippery con man.

Hey, did anyone else notice that last week, very quietly, every single staffer at the DNC was fired?

The claim that Russia hacked the DNC’s emails to help Trump is the sort of crackpot theory that can only be concocted after the fact.

They would prefer to say that North Korea or ISIS “hacked” our election and somehow installed Trump. But unfortunately, Trump has no business dealings with ISIS or the Pyongyang regime. He — or people he knows — have had some vague business dealings with Russia. So the left is stuck with its insane Russia conspiracy.

And now, just as the whole story is collapsing, their need is even more urgent, to distract from the Obama administration’s use of national security intelligence-gathering agencies to spy on domestic enemies like Donald Trump.

US Military Confirms N. Korea Fired Missile into Sea of Japan

The U.S. military confirmed Tuesday that nuclear-armed North Korea had fired a ballistic missile, finding it posed no threat to North America and vowing to work closely with its regional allies. The move came after the reclusive state warned it will retaliate if the global community ramps up sanctions over its latest round of weapons tests.

“The clock has now run out, and all options are on the table,” a senior White House official told CNN, following the news.

“North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a written statement. “The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment.”

Ahead of a key visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Donald Trump had said the United States was prepared to go it alone in bringing Pyongyang to heel if China did not step in.

“U.S. Pacific Command is fully committed to working closely with our Republic of Korea and Japanese allies to maintain security,” the military command in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region said.

“The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America.”

PACOM said it determined the launch of the KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile took place at 11:42 am (2142 GMT), landing in the Sea of Japan at 11:51 am, in line with findings by the South Korean defense ministry. Pyongyang is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year.

Trump: Syria’s Assad ‘crossed a lot of lines’ with gas attack

Reported

URL of the original posting site: http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/327436-trump-syrias-assad-crossed-a-lot-of-lines-with-gas-attack

President Trump is signaling a more aggressive approach toward Syria, saying on Wednesday reports of a deadly gas attack by forces loyal to  Bashar Assad had “crossed a lot of lines” and moved him to rethink his strategy.

At a joint press conference on Wednesday at the White House with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Trump indicated that the Syrian leader had gone too far with an attack this week that killed dozens of his own people and injured scores more, including women and children.

“It crossed a lot of lines for me,” Trump said. “When you kill innocent children, innocent babies, little babies with a chemical gas that is so lethal that people were shocked to hear what gas it was, that crosses many lines beyond the red line. Many, many lines.”

“I will tell you, what happened yesterday is unacceptable to me,” Trump added.

The strike on the rebel-held province of Idlib is being described as the worst chemical weapons attack in years, with human rights groups estimating that 72 people have died, including 20 children. The attack is believed to have been carried out by forces loyal to Assad, although the Syrian military has denied using chemical weapons.

Gruesome video footage has emerged showing Syrian children struggling to breathe from exposure to what is believed to be the nerve agent Sarin. Those images have provoked international outrage and an emergency meeting by the United Nations Security Council.

Trump has in the past warned that the U.S. should not get involved in the Syrian civil war, even while he has hammered former President Obama for backing away from his “red line” over Assad’s use of chemical weapons.

For example, Trump tweeted in 2013 that it would be “foolish” to intervene in the civil war and would bring nothing to the U.S. “President Obama, do not attack Syria,” Trump tweeted. “There is no upside and tremendous downside. Save your ‘powder’ for another (and more important) day!”

But the president on Wednesday struck an emotional tone at the Rose Garden press conference, saying the reports of women and children who had died had a “big impact” on him and caused him to rethink his strategy toward Assad.

“I do change. I am flexible. I am proud of that flexibility,” Trump said. “I will tell you that attack on children yesterday had a big impact on me. Big impact. It was a horrible, horrible thing. I’ve been watching it and seeing it, and it does not get any worse than that. I have that flexibility. And it is very, very possible, and I will tell you it is already happened, that my attitude toward Syria and Assad has changed very much.”

Trump declined to outline what his new approach to Syria might entail.

The developments pose a vexing challenge for the administration, which would prefer to keep its focus on fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, rather than meddling in a foreign civil war.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has called on Assad’s allies in Russia and Iran to intervene and discourage the Syrian leader from using chemical weapons on his own people. Tillerson has given no indication that the U.S. might play a role in Assad’s removal, saying days ago that his “longer term status…will be decided by the Syrian people.”

“We call upon Russia and Iran, yet again, to exercise their influence over the Syrian regime and to guarantee that this sort of horrific attack never happens again,” Tillerson said in a statement. “Russia and Iran also bear great moral responsibility for these deaths.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that Assad’s removal from power is “in the best interest of the Syrian people,” but Tillerson’s remarks “speak to the political realities of the situation.”

Trump on Wednesday also continued to cast blame on his predecessor for the instability, accusing former President Obama of creating the conditions that led to the gas attack by backing away from his “red line” threat against Assad for the use of chemical weapons.

“I think the Obama admission had a great opportunity to solve this crisis a long time ago when he said the red line in the sand,” Trump said. “When he did not cross that line after making the threat, I think that set us back a long ways, not only in Syria but in many other parts of the world because it was a blank threat. I think it was something that was not one of our better days as a country.”

Trump said , however,  that the responsibility for Syria is now his own.

“I now have responsibility, and I will have that responsibility and carry it very proudly,” he said. “I will tell you that. It is now my responsibility.”

Trump the Builder Targets Onerous Permits, Regulations. President rolls out prop to highlight scale of ‘red tape’ in the way of new infrastructure projects

Reported by Kathryn Blackhurst | Updated 04 Apr 2017 at 2:55 PM

URL of the original posting site: https://www.lifezette.com/polizette/trump-builder-targets-onerous-permits-regulations/

President Donald Trump used a chart to illustrate the “horrible” multi-step permitting process that often spans more than 10 years just to build “a simple highway.” He raised the issue while speaking Tuesday with more than 50 leading CEOs at the White House.

Trump pointed to the prop, noting that there are roughly 29 different statutes and five different executive orders that apply to the process for starting infrastructure projects at the federal level alone — not taking into account state regulations. Calling the degree of “red tape” involved in government building projects “incredible,” the president promised to speed up the zoning and permitting process and bring approval for projects down to one year.

“So we have a country with tremendous potential. We have the greatest people on earth, but we have to use that potential, and we have to let those people do their thing.”

“So this is to build a highway — a simple highway,” Trump noted. “But getting a building approved in New York is a horrible, horrible thing. And that’s nothing compared to when you get into the highways and the dams.”

CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted out a picture of Trump with the chart, noting, “At Town Hall with CEOs, Pres Trump illustrates all the permits and red tape in the way of  a [sic] building a new highway.”

Trump promised to slash stifling regulations that prevent infrastructure growth and job creation as his administration looks toward revitalizing the economy.

“We’re doing so many cuts on regulations. And we have a book on regulations, and if you add them all up, it goes up to the ceiling three times over. It’s just one after another after another. It’s just like that chart,” Trump said. “I thought that chart was so descriptive, and every industry is just like that chart. And that’s just to build a simple roadway or highway. That’s what you have to go through.”

The president promised to rid the process of 90-95 percent of federal regulations while still emphasizing “the same kind of protection” for the environment.

“We have a tremendous person that we put in charge of the [Environmental Protection Agency], Scott Pruitt, who is an environmental person,” Trump said. “He wants clean air. He wants clean water. But he doesn’t think it takes you 26 years to get a permit to build a building and to have jobs, at which time those companies are usually gone or out of business.”

“So, we’re really speeding up the process,” Trump added. “We’re going to try and take that process from a minimum of ten years down to one year.”

Promising to create a committee tasked with overseeing the regulatory cuts, Trump pledged that infrastructure reform and job creation would coincide successfully with respect for the environment.

The next escalation in the great judicial war is upon us. As Senate Democrats gird themselves to filibuster President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Republicans may just take a page from Democrats’ 2013 playbook and invoke what’s known as the nuclear option — a change to Senate rules that would effectively block a filibuster of Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, Neil Gorsuch included.

Current Senate rules require Supreme Court nominees to meet a 60-vote threshold in order to be confirmed, which gives the minority party an incredible amount of power in blocking the nominee’s confirmation — exactly as the Founding Fathers intended. Invoking the nuclear option, as Senate Democrats did in 2013 with lower court nominations, would make the confirmation a simple majority vote. In order words, Gorsuch and every future Supreme Court nominee would only need 51 votes to be confirmed — dramatically weakening the minority party’s ability to block a nominee.

For decades, with the increasing politicization of the bench has come an even greater politicization of the Supreme Court nomination process. What began with Robert Bork will now culminate in a nuclear vote for Neil Gorsuch and all the rest of Donald Trump’s nominees, with the losing party naturally up in arms.

Delaware Democrat Chris Coons — who became the necessary 41st filibuster pledge to force the GOP’s hand on Gorscuh’s nomination — called the prospect of lowering the vote threshold “tragic” just last week.

But, “in war,” the Greek writer Aeshcylus reminds us, “truth is the first casualty.” The shoe was one the other foot for several of these same Democrats just three and a half years ago. Back then a Democrat Senate majority led by former Senator Harry Reid ended the filibuster for circuit court level nominees.

Here are some of their greatest hits from ‘Nuclear 2013.’

1. “[Democrats would] much prefer the risk of up-or-down votes in majority rule than the risk of continued total obstruction. That’s the bottom line, no matter who’s in power.”Sen. Chuck Schumer, D, N.Y.

2. “It’s never, ever, ever been like this. You reach a point where your frustrations just overwhelm and things have to change.” – Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., justifying the nuclear option to The Daily Beast.

3. “Every senator takes an oath of office promising to support and defend the Constitution. No senator takes an oath to protect the filibuster.” – Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in The Boston Globe

4. “This is a terrific vote for the U.S. Senate.” Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.

5. “We all have heard the story of President Washington saying the Senate is a cooling saucer, but never was the Senate intended to be a deep freeze … [y]et that is what it has become.” – Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.

6. “I’m just so encouraged now that we’re going to be able to — without filibusters — put people on the courts in an orderly way.” Tom Udall, D-N.M.

7. “If there are differences in the Senate, then debate should be had, people should vote their conscience, they should vote on behalf of their constituents, but they should vote. That’s what they’re there to do. And ultimately, if you got a majority of folks who believe in something, then it should be able to pass.” President Barack Obama

8. “Americans sent us here to get things done, but in recent years, the minority has filibustered again and again — not to slow action out of substantive concerns, but for political gain. Any president — Democrat or Republican — should be able to make their necessary appointments.”Tom Udall

9. “The Senate has spoken. It has said we have tried to restore, through mutual understanding, the norms and traditions of the Senate time and time again, and each time the minority has failed to uphold its position.” Jeff Merkley

10. “Ending the abusive filibuster on nominations is a big step toward restoring the functionality of the Senate, and that matters for all of us. I hope we continue to look at ways to make this legislative body work better. We face big challenges as a nation, and we need a Congress that can take on those challenges.” Jeff Merkley

Perhaps one of the most prescient and telling quotes for the situation was uttered by then-Majority Leader Harry Reid as he walked out of the chamber following the 2013 vote:

11. “When the Republicans are in power, these changes will apply to them as well. That’s simple fairness.”

As Guy Benson points out in greater detail at TownHall, the GOP’s decision — while unfortunate — has been precipitated by years of Democrat-driven obfuscation and obstruction on judicial nominations. Democrats have made their beds, now they’ll have to get nuked in them.

Susan Rice: the “Typhoid Mary” of the Obama Administration

Reported By Onan Coca |  April 4, 2017

URL of the original posting site: http://constitution.com/susan-rice-typhoid-mary-obama-administration/

Susan Rice Typhoid Mary

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) had some very tough words for former National Security Advisor Susan Rice when he appeared on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show Tuesday morning.

Their conversation focused solely on Cotton’s work on the Senate Intelligence Committee and the current storm swirling around Susan Rice, the Obama administration, and President Trump. Many of Hewitt’s early questions set the stage to really understand what is “normal” when it comes to the government’s ability to “unmask” American citizens and why that might happen. Cotton explained that the situation is highly unorthodox and that in his capacity on the Intelligence Committee he’s never seen anything like it. He then outline 3 major issue areas that the Senate is interested in getting to the bottom of:

  1. What role did Russia play in interfering in our electoral process?
  2. Getting to the bottom of the conspiracy theories attempting to connect President Trump to the Russian government.
  3. Potential wrong doing by Obama administration officials in the handling of classified information and unmasking US citizens without proper grounds.

Cotton also pointed out that the only crime that has thus far been uncovered is connected to the 3rd issue, Michael Flynn’s unmasking and the leaking of his name to the media is the only crime that we KNOW FOR SURE has happened.

Cotton then had a very harsh observation to make about Susan Rice herself.

“Susan Rice is the Typhoid Mary of the Obama administration foreign policy. Every time something went wrong, she seemed to turn up in the middle of it, whether it was these allegations of improper unmasking, intentional or improper surveillance, whether it’s Benghazi or the other fiascos over the eight years of the Obama administration.”

The junior Senator from Arkansas also intimated that Rice was likely lying about her involvement in this story, “If Eli Lake’s reporting is correct, it is hard to square what Susan Rice said in that PBS interview.”

Former US Attorney: Susan Rice Ordered Spy Agencies To Produce ‘Detailed Spreadsheets’ Involving Trump

Reported by Photo of Richard Pollock Richard Pollock | Reporter | 10:08 PM 04/03/2017

Update: In response to a question Tuesday from NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell,  former Obama White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice denied that she “prepared” spreadsheets of surveilled telephone calls involving Donald Trump and his aides. The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group, however, reported that Rice “ordered” the spreadsheets to be produced.

In addition, former U.S. Attorney Joe DiGenova, one of TheDCNF’s sources, said Tuesday in response to Rice that her denial “would come as quite a surprise to the government officials who have reviewed dozens of those spreadsheets.”

Former President Barack Obama’s national security adviser Susan Rice ordered U.S. spy agencies to produce “detailed spreadsheets” of legal phone calls involving Donald Trump and his aides when he was running for president, according to former U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova.

“What was produced by the intelligence community at the request of Ms. Rice were detailed spreadsheets of intercepted phone calls with unmasked Trump associates in perfectly legal conversations with individuals,” diGenova told The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group Monday.

“The overheard conversations involved no illegal activity by anybody of the Trump associates, or anyone they were speaking with,” diGenova said. “In short, the only apparent illegal activity was the unmasking of the people in the calls.”

Other official sources with direct knowledge and who requested anonymity confirmed to TheDCNF diGenova’s description of surveillance reports Rice ordered one year before the 2016 presidential election.

Also on Monday, Fox News and Bloomberg News, citing multiple sources reported that Rice had requested the intelligence information that was produced in a highly organized operation. Fox said the unmasked names of Trump aides were given to officials at the National Security Council (NSC), the Department of Defense, James Clapper, President Obama’s Director of National Intelligence, and John Brennan, Obama’s CIA Director. Joining Rice in the alleged White House operations was her deputy Ben Rhodes, according to Fox.

Critics of the atmosphere prevailing throughout the Obama administration’s last year in office point to former Obama Deputy Defense Secretary Evelyn Farkas who admitted in a March 2 television interview on MSNBC that she “was urging my former colleagues,” to “get as much information as you can, get as much intelligence as you can, before President Obama leaves the administration.”

Farkas sought to walk back her comments in the weeks following: “I didn’t give anybody anything except advice.”

Col. (Ret.) James Waurishuk, an NSC veteran and former deputy director for intelligence at the U.S. Central Command, told TheDCNF that many hands had to be involved throughout the Obama administration to launch such a political spying program.

“The surveillance initially is the responsibility of the National Security Agency,” Waurishuk said. “They have to abide by this guidance when one of the other agencies says, ‘we’re looking at this particular person which we would like to unmask.’”

“The lawyers and counsel at the NSA surely would be talking to the lawyers and members of counsel at CIA, or at the National Security Council or at the Director of National Intelligence or at the FBI,” he said. “It’s unbelievable of the level and degree of the administration to look for information on Donald Trump and his associates, his campaign team and his transition team. This is really, really serious stuff.”

Michael Doran, former NSC senior director, told TheDCNF Monday that “somebody blew a hole in the wall between national security secrets and partisan politics.” This “was a stream of information that was supposed to be hermetically sealed from politics and the Obama administration found a way to blow a hole in that wall,” he said.

Doran charged that potential serious crimes were undertaken because “this is a leaking of signal intelligence.”

“That’s a felony,” he told TheDCNF. “And you can get 10 years for that. It is a tremendous abuse of the system. We’re not supposed to be monitoring American citizens. Bigger than the crime, is the breach of public trust.”

Waurishuk said he was most dismayed that “this is now using national intelligence assets and capabilities to spy on the elected, yet-to-be-seated president.”

“We’re looking at a potential constitutional crisis from the standpoint that we used an extremely strong capability that’s supposed to be used to safeguard and protect the country,” he said. “And we used it for political purposes by a sitting president. That takes on a new precedent.”

Rice denies Obama administration inappropriately unmasked Trump team

Reported

Former national security adviser Susan Rice on Tuesday categorically denied that the Obama administration inappropriately spied on President Trump or members of his transition team.

“The allegation is that somehow, Obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes,” Rice told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “That’s absolutely false.”

Rice had requested that at least one Trump transition team member be “unmasked,” Bloomberg View reported Monday, leading to claims that the Obama White House had intended to use that intelligence to damage Trump’s transition. While Rice did not deny making any such requests — declining to comment on specific reports — she denied that her actions went outside the scope of her job.

“It was not uncommon, it was necessary at times to make those requests,” she said. “I don’t have a particular recollection of doing that more frequently after the election.”

“The notion, which some people are trying to suggest, that by asking for the identity of the American person is the same is leaking it — that’s completely false,” Rice said.

Rice also flatly denied exposing Trump’s own former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign in February after media reports revealed that he misled Vice President Pence about the contents of his discussions with the Russian ambassador.

“I leaked nothing to nobody,” she said.

Two anonymous U.S. officials told Bloomberg’s Eli Lake that the former Obama national security adviser was the one who requested unmasking Trump administration officials in raw intelligence files since viewed by Reps. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the heads of the House Intel Committee.

Trump immediately exhorted the press to “start talking about the Obama SURVEILLANCE SCANDAL” — but intelligence experts caution that the reports don’t mean that Obama or even Rice surveilled Trump officials.

Normally, when government officials receive intelligence reports, the names of American citizens are redacted to protect their privacy. But officials can request that names — listed as “U.S. Person 1,” for example — be “unmasked” internally in order to give context about the potential value of the intelligence. The national security adviser has the authority to request the unmasking names if there is a compelling national security reason to do so.

“I don’t solicit reports,” Rice said Tuesday. “They’re giving it to me, if I read it, and I think that in order for me to understand, is it significant or not so significant, I need to know who the ‘U.S. Person’ is, I can make that request.”

Nothing in the Bloomberg report, Rice emphasized, backs up President Trump’s claim that the former President Obama “wiretapped” Trump Tower.

“There was no such collection or surveillance on Trump Tower or Trump individuals, it is important to understand, directed by the White House or targeted at Trump individuals,” Rice said.

Republicans have treated the revelation that Rice requested names be unmasked as proof that the Obama White House was inappropriately surveilling the Trump transition team.

“Smoking gun found! Obama pal and noted dissembler Susan Rice said to have been spying on Trump campaign,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) tweeted, citing the Bloomberg report.

Republicans have called for Rice to testify under oath, a request she sidestepped on Tuesday.

“Let’s see what comes,” she told Mitchell, when asked if she would testify on the matter. “I’m not going to sit here and prejudge.

Citing the multiple “very important and very serious” investigations into Russian interference in the U.S. election,  Rice said, “As a formal U.S. official, I would want to be helpful in that process if I could.”

The House and Senate Intelligence Committees, as well as the FBI, are all conducting probes into Russian interference. While the Senate investigation has continued apace, largely behind closed doors, the House probe has been bogged down in partisan fighting over Nunes’ discovery of the documents he says reveal inappropriate unmasking of transition team names. Onlookers have suggested that the exposure of Rice’s actions explains Nunes’ mysterious decision to view the documents at the White House, rather than the House Intelligence Committee’s secure location — because they belonged to the National Security Council. Nunes raced back to the White House the day after viewing the documents there to brief the president on his findings, which were reportedly brought to his attention by White House staffers.

Democrats have accused the White House of “laundering” intelligence through the committee in order to provide justification for the president’s wiretapping claims.

Trump hits Obama after Syrian gas attack

President Trump on Tuesday said a deadly gas attack in Syria carried out by forces loyal to Syrian leader Bashar Assad is a “consequence” of former President Obama’s approach to the country’s civil war.

“Today’s chemical attack in Syria against innocent people, including women and children, is reprehensible and cannot be ignored by the civilized world,” Trump said in a statement.

The president faulted his predecessor for helping create the conditions for the attack when he backed away from his 2012 “red line” on Assad’s use of chemical weapons.

“These heinous actions by the Bashar al-Assad regime are a consequence of the past administration’s weakness and irresolution,” Trump said.

Trump criticized Obama’s approach, even though he personally urged his predecessor not to intervene in the Syrian civil war on numerous occasions.

“AGAIN, TO OUR VERY FOOLISH LEADER, DO NOT ATTACK SYRIA – IF YOU DO MANY VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN & FROM THAT FIGHT THE U.S. GETS NOTHING!” he tweeted in September 2013.

“President Obama, do not attack Syria,” he tweeted days later. “There is no upside and tremendous downside. Save your ‘powder’ for another (and more important) day!”

Trump did not say how the U.S. would respond to the attack, which is considered the worst chemical weapons strike in years in Syria.  The strike, which was carried out in rebel-held area of Idlib Province, killed dozens of people, including children, and injured more.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called on Russia and Iran, both allies of Assad, to discourage him from using chemical weapons on his own people.

“We call upon Russia and Iran, yet again, to exercise their influence over the Syrian regime and to guarantee that this sort of horrific attack never happens again,” Tillerson said in a statement. “Russia and Iran also bear great moral responsibility for these deaths.”

Syrian military forces have denied using chemical weapons in the attack, according to Reuters.

The attack posed a sharp challenge to the Trump administration, which has said it wants to shift its focus away from the civil war and onto the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Tillerson just days ago said that the “longer term status of President Assad will be decided by the Syrian people.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that the secretary’s comments “speak to the political realities of the situation in Syria” but said that Assad’s exit as leader is “in the best interest of the Syrian people.”

The Democrats Lies of Ties Between Russia and Trump Continue to Unravel

Reported By Warner Todd Huston | April 3, 2017

URL of the original posting site: http://constitution.com/democrats-lies-ties-russia-trump-continue-unravel/

Trump Putin Russia

Since before Donald Trump won last year’s presidential election, Democrats have been desperately trying to fool the American people into thinking that Trump somehow worked hand-in-hand with the Russians to steal away the White House from Hillary Clinton. But thus far, after months of pseudo investigations, not a scintilla of proof has been revealed. And this weekend, Democrat Adam Schiff once again showed that Democrats have nothing but lies and innuendo against Trump.

The California Democrat has been at the forefront of attempting to fool America into thinking Trump is all mixed up with Vladimir Putin’s corrupt Russian government. Over last weekend, Schiff appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with host Jake Tapper to continue pushing his false claims against the president. But when Tapper asked Schiff about actual proof, the congressman’s reply was telling for its evasiveness and lack of specificity.

When Tapper asked Schiff to get more specific during the April 2 broadcast, Schiff mumbled that he “can’t say” if the evidence against any ties to Russia are correct. He also softened his previous criticism of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R, CA) for having visited the White House before he made his revelations that the Obama administration had, indeed, been surveilling Trump and his campaign before the election. Schiff dissembled further by backing off his previous claim that evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia was “more than circumstantial.”

It other words, Schiff pretty much proved that all the charges he has been spreading around for the last few weeks are all just political bomb throwing meant to hurt Trump but are based on no proof whatsoever. Rep. Schiff has emerged as the Democrats’ chief attack dog in the House of Representatives — because everyone dismisses Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as a loon — since Nunes made his proclamations about the proof of Obama’s surveillance of Trump.

One of Schiff’s main charges is that Nunes seemed to be coordinating with Trump because Nunes had visited the White House to look at secret intel the same day he announced what he had seen about Obama’s surveillance. Nunes and the Democrats called this visit to the White House “suspicious.”

But as the Democrats tried to make something out of Nunes’ visit to the White House grounds, the facts tell a different story. Nunes himself appeared on Fox News and noted that he often goes to the Executive Branch to view secret material and meet sources for his role as head of the Intel Committee.

“We go to the executive branch at least once or twice a week,” Nunes told Bill O’Reilly last week. “This is not unusual, because there are intelligence products that we don’t have access to in the House of Representatives, although we do have the clearances to see them.

Nunes also noted that he knew of the Obama administration’s surveillance of Trump even before last month’s revelations.

“So, we’ve known about this long before Trump actually sent his famous tweet out about the ‘wiretapping’ at Trump Tower,” Nunes added. “We’ve known that there was additional unmasking of Americans’ names. We’ve had sources that have provided that information. And so, what I had to do was that I needed a place that I could actually go and find this information and review it.”

For his part, Rep. Schiff was asked about this “unmasking” claim and once again he backed off his earlier harsh criticism saying he “can’t say whether anything was masked or unmasked properly.” Schiff said he disagreed with Nunes’ “characterization” of the evidence, but refused to go so far as to say Nunes was flat out wrong… despite he has essentially been saying Nunes is wrong for over a week.

Jake Tapper went on to press Schiff on whether or not there was evidence of “collusion” between Trump and Putin and Schiff backed off his past claims here, too, replying, “I don’t think we can say anything definitively at this point.” Schiff’s complete failure to back up his and his Party’s claims is telling. It seems to add more support to claims by two Obama officials that there is absolutely no evidence of Trump ties to Russia and Trump’s own claims that he and his campaign were the victims of illegal surveillance visited upon him by Obama.

Despite this complete lack of any evidence… and I mean there’s no evidence at all… the left is continuing to push the fiction that Trump is all tied up with Russia. Indeed, after Nunes revealed what he has seen as head of the Intel Committee, Democrats floated a talking point that Nunes should “recuse himself” from the investigation. Once again, this shows that Democrats are acting in a nakedly partisan political manner because there is no such thing as “recusing” oneself in a congressional committee. After this ridiculous call for Nunes’ recusal began making the rounds among Democrats, the California congressman laughed it off askingwhy would I?

“Why would I?” Nunes told the media when they asked him about the Democrats’ demands. “Because someone asks? That sounds like their problem.”

Indeed, Nunes is 100 percent right. It IS “their problem.” Because the House Intel Committee is a political entity, not a legal or court-related one. There is no reason nor any conventions for anyone to “recuse” themselves from a political committee. Only judges, police officers, or lawyers have to recuse themselves from investigations to which they have intimate ties of a personal or political nature. This is because justice needs to be impartial. But politics does not. There is no requirement of recusal in politics. Sure, congressman can recuse themselves if they like. But there is no legal requirement to do so.

But the whole campaign against Trump launched by the Democrats has nothing to do with facts, truth, or what is good for America. It is all just a naked, partisan attempt to undermine Trump.

As Daily Caller recent noted, a former clinical psychologist is pointing out that Democrats are practicing the politics of destruction, not the politics of persuasion and debate. Psychologist Tim Daughtry, told the DC that Democrats are working to destroy the U.S. in a gross attempt to steal power.

The rise of vilification campaigns, as taught by Saul Alinsky, is reducing our civility as Democrats try to destroy, not debate, those who disagree with them, Daughtry explains.

Gaslighting is on display as arguments like the “Russians hacked the election” or “Putin is controlling President Trump” attempt to manipulate public opinion. Reality dislocation techniques can erode Trump’s approval ratings so as to slow the bold Trump mandates.

As always, truth and facts do not matter to Democrats. Only power does.

In the end, I feel quite comfortable predicting that there will never be any proof tying Donald Trump to the Russians. After all, Obama launched an illicit surveillance campaign against Trump way back in October, if not before, and his FBI, NSA, and CIA were sneaking around trying to catch Trump with a gotcha since then — and it continues still today with all the Obama quislings still in our government — and thus far there is no proof. Nothing, zero, zip, nada.

With the entirety of Obama’s police state trying to prove Trump is a Russian operative and with the subsequent complete failure to come up with even any circumstantial proof, one can’t come to any other conclusion than that this whole thing is just a mean spirited whisper campaign aimed at delegitimizing Trump in the eyes of the voters as opposed to a serious investigation looking for truth.

Alicia Keys Glamorizes Niqab

“How can any intelligent person, man or women, possibly support wanting to bring an ideology that treats women as less than third class humans into this country? I do not care how liberal you want to appear but female genital mutilations, rapes and honor killings are not acceptable in any civilized society. How about throwing gays off of roof tops? Wearing burka’s and hijab should be a clue.”

Funny how the democrats and the press like to ignore the obvious evidence of democrat scandals in an effort to embrace fake news on Trump.
