Michael Matranga Op-ed: Trump assassination attempt: 3 key questions the Secret Service must answer

The American people are more than a week out from the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in Butler, Pa. We have few – if any – answers as to why it was allowed to occur. As a former Secret Service agent, I have three crucial questions that we need answers to right away.

1. Who Was Responsible for Securing the Building?

There was catastrophic failure in defining and communicating who was responsible for posting and holding the building where the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, accessed the rooftop and fired at President Trump and rally attendees from on Saturday, July 13th.

SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR KIMBERLY CHEATLE REACTS TO INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF TRUMP ASSASSINATION PLOT

The way the Secret Service primarily defines and designates responsibility is through a series of events commonly known as the “7 Phases of Site Advance.” All agents are trained in this process prior to graduating from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia.

Video

We assess potential weaknesses and points of interest where a threat could emerge. We need to ask how the information or specific assignments regarding the duties of the Butler Township Police Department became unclear.

Simply put, the United States Secret Service is a Dual Mission Agency. It’s both investigative and protective. Though the Investigative Mission was the original purpose of the agency’s formation in 1865, in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley, the United States Secret Service began protecting America’s presidents, vice presidents and other heads of state.

Video

Over the last decade, the United States Secret Service (USSS) has been under a tremendous manpower strain due to limited resources. Numerous appeals to increase the budget for recruitment and to advance the agency’s technological capabilities have not been fruitful.

WHO WAS THOMAS MATTHEW CROOKS? WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT TRUMP’S ATTEMPTED ASSASSIN

Many of these requests have been denied by the Department of Homeland Security and Congress. If granted, an increase was minimal to an already anemic budget.  Combined with the high demand for additional details to be stood up at the request of current and past administrations, it has wreaked havoc on the agency and put additional strain on the obligation to keep protectees safe.

Video

The last three administrations have all added additional protectees to the responsibility of the agency and the men and women of the United States Secret Service. Yet, there remains a tremendous strain on manpower, hence the need for the agency to rely so heavily on the local authorities to fill the gaps.

I am confident what the American people will see as the investigation unfolds is that the “rooftop” in question was addressed as a concern by the Counter Sniper & Counter Assault Team who are responsible for the tactical advance. With that said, due to manpower restraints, the outer perimeter posts are primarily manned by local counterparts. Though the agency cannot function without their cooperation, the reality is that policing and security are not the same – one is primarily reactive and the other proactive and preventative.

FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRAT CALLS FOR SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR TO RESIGN OVER TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

By using primarily reactive local counterpart units, there has always been a disconnect about why we in the security industry, especially the United States Secret Service, do things which those in the reactive industry normally carry out. For instance, standing on the roof of a building in the hot sun for hours to ensure the integrity of the site before, during and shortly after one of the agency’s protective visits.

Video

For the shooter in Butler, Pa. to fall through the cracks is beyond me. We need to know who made the call for the local counterparts to remain inside the building rather than on top of the roof. If the directive to be on top of the building was given by the agency, then why, prior to taking the stage or arriving at the site once the site posts were manned and the site was secured, was a correction not made?

DONALD TRUMP’S SECRET SERVICE PROTECTION UNDER INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

2) Why was President Trump allowed to take the stage at the time he did?

We must not assume, based on media reports, that the Secret Service and Butler Township police had information prior to President Trump taking the stage in Pennsylvania that Crooks was a person of interest, based upon media reports.

Based upon the writing captured in the online gaming platform he used to describe his “premiere” being on July 13, we can’t assume that anyone would know what his intentions were due to the vagueness of his post.

TRUMP TELLS JESSE WATTERS THAT HE WAS NOT WARNED ABOUT GUNMAN, DESPITE REPORTS

We must ask how the information was processed by local authorities within his parents’ jurisdiction and if that information was relayed to Butler Township and subsequently to the Secret Service.

Video

Based upon my knowledge, skills, training, and professional experience, that statement alone from the parents would not constitute a threat. We must wait until there is a full investigation to be able to determine if the communications sequence of events is thoroughly examined to determine where the failure was and who is responsible.

Crooks appears to have impulsively put together a hasty plan within the 24–36 hours prior to the event. The USSS, for almost 3 decades, has conducted extensive research on these events and commonly refer to this as “pre-attack planning.” According to reports, his parents notified authorities he was missing and potentially had ill intentions towards former President Trump. This is what we commonly refer to as leakage.

There are now videos that have surfaced showing Crooks conducting what appears to be a site survey or reconnaissance. My question is: If the parents reported him to authorities and expressed his potential target as being President Trump, was that information relayed from the receiving agency to the Butler Township Police and further the protective detail?

Video

ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON TRUMP AT PENNSYLVANIA RALLY LEAVES 2 HURT, 2 DEAD, INCLUDING SHOOTER

Speaking from experience, it is common to have reports of an unknown suspicious person at protective sites. All efforts are made to locate the individual by the designated Counter Surveillance Team. If located, those individuals will be interviewed by the designated Protective Intelligence Team to determine their intentions. However, if the information were relayed and the authorities had an unknown suspicious person on the ground and there was an imminent threat, I believe the following questions would be appropriate to ask those in charge:

* Why the rush to get the president on stage?

* Why not delay?

Protective assignments 101 would dictate that you would hold off on having the person you are assigned to protect with protecting be put in a potentially life-threatening position.

SECRET SERVICE RESPONDS TO REPORT THEY ‘REPEATEDLY’ DENIED REQUESTS TO TRUMP SECURITY DETAIL IN THE PAST

The truth is that it would have taken little effort to take a tactical pause, assess the situation, locate the person of interest and prevent what the American people haven’t seen in 43 years – an assassination attempt on a president.

3. When will USSS Chief Kimberly Cheatle speak to the American people?

According to reports, the United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle will provide testimony before a Senate Panel this coming week to answer these questions.

As a former agent, I know the agency has a “One Voice Policy,” which I agree with. However, this is a historic event. I, former colleagues, and others currently serving in the agency feel her lack of transparency and decision not to speak to the American people was a failure. We deserve better.

To the men and women of the United States Secret Service, keep doing what you are doing. This is not a reflection of you but instead a reflection of failed policies, failed leadership, divisive politics, failed political appointments on numerous levels and those within the agency in higher leadership roles.

Video

Some may have forgotten that it is you who breathe that breathes life into the agency. It is you that makes it happen on a day-to-day basis. Stay strong, lean on each other, band together and keep your head on a swivel.

This country needs you, the silent protectors, the ones who sacrifice births, first steps, weekends, holidays and other precious moments that we, as Americans, take for granted daily. You are the men and women in the arena.

We need answers as to who knew what and when. My hope is that Director Cheatle can provide some insights for the American people and the men and women of the Secret Service.

Secret Service Director: Trump Assassination Attempt Was Biggest Agency ‘Failure’ in Decades

Secret Service Director: Trump Assassination Attempt Was Biggest Agency 'Failure' in Decades

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said Monday that her agency failed in its mission to protect former President Donald Trump during a highly contentious congressional hearing with lawmakers of both major political parties demanding she resign over security failures that allowed a gunman to scale a roof and open fire at a campaign rally.

In her first congressional hearing over the July 13 assassination attempt, Cheatle repeatedly angered lawmakers by evading questions, citing ongoing investigations. She called the attempt on Trump’s life the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades. Cheatle acknowledged that the Secret Service was told about a suspicious person “between two and five times” before the shooting.

Yet, Cheatle gave no indication she intends to resign even as she said she takes “full responsibility” for any security lapses at the Pennsylvania rally. Cheatle vowed to “move heaven and earth” to ensure that nothing like it ever happens again.

“The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders. On July 13th, we failed,” Cheatle said.

Lawmakers peppered Cheatle with questions about how the gunman could get so close to the Republican presidential nominee when he was supposed to be carefully guarded and about why Trump was allowed to take the stage after local law enforcement had identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as suspicious.

Cheatle acknowledged that Crooks had been seen by local law enforcement before the shooting with a rangefinder, a small device resembling binoculars that hunters use to measure distance from a target. She said the Secret Service would have paused the rally if agents had been told there was an “actual threat,” but she said there’s a difference between someone identified as suspicious and someone identified as a true threat.

Asked about why there were no agents on the roof where the shooter was located or if the Secret Service used drones to monitor the area, Cheatle said she is still waiting for the investigation to play out, prompting groans and outbursts from members on the committee.

“Director Cheatle, because Donald Trump is alive, and thank God he is, you look incompetent,” said Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio. “If he were killed you would look culpable.”

Cheatle, who has spent nearly three decades at the agency, remained defiant that she was the “right person” to lead the Secret Service despite the failures. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., noted that the Secret Service director who presided over the agency when there was an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan later stepped down.

“The one thing we have to have in this country are agencies that transcend politics and have the confidence of independents, Democrats, Republicans, progressives and conservatives,” Khanna said, adding that the Secret Service was no longer one of those agencies.

Trump was wounded in the ear, one rally attendee was killed, and two other attendees were injured after Crooks climbed atop the roof of a nearby building and opened fire with an AR-style rifle shortly after Trump started speaking at the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Secret Service has acknowledged it denied some requests by Trump’s campaign for increased security at his events in the years before the assassination attempt. But Cheatle said that there were “no assets denied” for the rally.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has called what happened a “failure” while several lawmakers have called on Cheatle to resign or for President Joe Biden to fire her. The Secret Service has said Cheatle does not intend to step down. So far, she retains the support of Biden, a Democrat, and Mayorkas.

Before the shooting, local law enforcement had noticed Crooks pacing around the edges of the rally, peering into the lens of a rangefinder toward the rooftops behind the stage where the president later stood, officials have told The Associated Press. An image of Crooks was circulated by officers stationed outside the security perimeter.

Witnesses later saw him climbing up the side of a squat manufacturing building that was within 135 meters (157 yards) of the stage. He then set up his rifle and lay on the rooftop, a detonator in his pocket to set off crude explosive devices that were stashed in his car parked nearby.

The attack on Trump was the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Reagan was shot in 1981. It was the latest in a series of security lapses by the agency that has drawn investigations and public scrutiny over the years.

Authorities have been hunting for clues into what motivated Crooks but have not found any ideological bent that could help explain his actions. Investigators who searched his phone found photos of Trump, Biden and other senior government officials and found that he had looked up the dates for the Democratic National Conventional as well as Trump’s appearances. He also searched for information about major depressive order.

It’s clear by now that the U.S. Secret Service is not a very elite security detail. Random, weaponless rallygoers paid more serious attention to the would-be assassin before he fired than the allegedly professional team assigned to Donald Trump on Saturday. Trump’s security detail did not secure him. Someone else did.

The Person who saved Trump’s life — and our nation from dangerous social unrest — is Jesus Christ. It is not random that wind gusts were present in just the right amount to have shifted the bullet’s course from fatal to flesh wound. It is not accidental that Trump turned his head at precisely the right second to avoid sudden death.

To phrase it as Whittaker Chambers did in explaining his conversion from atheism to Christianity, which began when he watched his toddler eating: “My eye came to rest on the intricate convolutions of her ear — those intricate, perfect ears. The thought passed through my mind: ‘No, those ears were not created by any chance coming together of atoms in nature. … They could have been created only by immense design.’ … I did not then know that, at that moment, the finger of God was first laid on my forehead.”

The finger of God was also laid on Trump’s forehead Saturday night, turning it in the precise direction at the precise moment to spare his life. The chances of everything occurring as it did by random chance are impossibly improbable. No, the only Person who saved Trump is the same Person Who saves anyone who is ever saved: Jesus Christ, the God of the universe in human flesh.

He Who Controls Both Body and Soul

The whole world watched a miracle in live-time on global TV Saturday night. We watched in striking color the reality that the life and death of every person — and nation — is held in God’s hands. It is Jesus Christ who proclaims:

[D]o not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So, everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

This is why the Christian martyrs often surprised their captors by boldly declaring that no one could put them to death. For the true God promises that “he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” The good man who died saving other people’s lives in Pennsylvania Saturday, Corey Comperatore, believed in Him Who Is “the resurrection, and the life,” and Who promises, “[W]hosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”

According to Comperatore’s daughter, he was a “man of God” who “loved Jesus fiercely.” No one took Comperatore’s life. Like his Savior, Jesus Christ, he laid it down for those he loved. Also, like Jesus Christ, he will rise again. In the same chapter of Matthew quoted above, Jesus promises, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” See you in eternity, brother.

The Power of Life and Death Is God’s

Saturday was not Trump’s Day to die. His near-death experience was a very visible divine event displaying to all the world Who holds full power over life and death: Jesus Christ. It is a spiritual shock treatment to increase the faith of those who believe and ignite new faith in those ready to believe.

Even with a highly competent Secret Service, Trump could fall at any time God chooses, to any malady. Like every one of us, he could have — God forbid, of course — a heart attack, an aneurysm, or myriad other fatal events. Not even the world’s best doctors or warriors can stop death. The best they can do is sometimes delay it.

As Proverbs says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Yes, the king’s heart and his head as well. The psalmist says, “But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. … I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.”

No one but God shifted Trump’s head that day, and no one but God decides when Trump will meet his Maker. It’s direct and clear evidence that, yes, there is a God, and he divinely intervenes in human affairs.

Miracles Are Proof God Is Real

Miracles are everywhere. They are proof that God is real. And the fact that He’s real should change all of us every moment of our lives.

Miracles are both a rare and everyday occurrence. Every time a child is conceived is a miracle. That happens hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of times each day. It’s a miracle there aren’t more wars, that millions of people have clean and even hot water, that billions of people can eat enough to stay alive every day. Such quotidian miracles are typically hidden: inside mothers’ bodies, plastic pipes, farmers’ tools, the everyday.

Miracles like the one we saw Saturday are rarer and thus a special call for us all to stop, reflect, and pray. That’s because, if we’re honest, we all understand that any of us could die at any moment and face God’s just judgment, yet so many of us are mercifully spared each minute. This highly visible mercy for our undeserving nation calls for national and international gratitude, repentance, faith, and prayer.

David Marcus Op-ed: The Secret Service in shambles reveals a White House where the buck stops nowhere

The most central and important rule of the Biden administration is that nothing that happens is ever the fault of the Biden administration. It’s not just that the buck doesn’t stop with the president, it doesn’t stop anywhere in the executive branch, including, we now know, the Secret Service.

In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, we’ve heard that the once and likely future president was being protected by a mix of Secret Service agents and state and local police. And as it has become more obvious that the Saturday attack was a catastrophic security failure, the finger-pointing and ass covering has begun.

SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR FACES NEW HEAT FOR ‘SLOPED ROOF’ EXCUSE

According to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the federal agency was only responsible for the actual grounds where Trump spoke, not the surrounding area, which he claims was the responsibility of the local police. This is abject nonsense. The idea that the Secret Service was not responsible for a building with perfect sniper sightlines 150 yards from where Trump was speaking doesn’t just strain credulity, it snaps it in half. And the idea that guarding Trump was up to local cops and not the agency whose sole mission is keeping protectees safe doesn’t pass the smell test.

Video

We are talking about the life and death protection of a former and, at this point, likely future president of the United States. You don’t outsource that to local cops in a town of 13,000 people. It’s like asking Andy Griffith to hunt down ISIS.

The director of the Secret Service, Kim Cheatle, we have to come to understand, is a massive proponent of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. After Biden in 2022 made her just the second woman ever to lead the agency, she boasted Security Magazine of her prowess at breaking glass ceilings and the agency’s website states that Cheatle is responsible for executing the agency’s integrated mission of “protection and investigations by leading a diverse workforce.”

It’s too soon to say that this obsession with DEI came at the expense of Trump’s safety, but we all saw the video of the shooting’s aftermath, where a female agent a foot shorter than Trump tried to cover his body and another struggled to holster her gun. It made the Keystone Cops look like Kojak.

Allow me to be blunt, Cheattle should be fired. It should have happened days ago, but as Trump pointed out at the debate, nobody ever gets fired by Joe Biden.

Sullivan at White House press briefing

Jake Sullivan still has his job after saying the Middle East was calm about 10 minutes before Hamas’ heinous Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Alejandro Mayorkas is still running the broken and busted border, and now a Secret Service Director’s incompetence and bizarre priorities have come within a whisker of getting Trump killed. At this point, I have no idea what somebody would have to do to get fired by Biden. Maybe burn down the White House?

SECRET SERVICE DIRECTOR RIPPED FOR ‘UNACCEPTABLE’ RESPONSE TO TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

We all know that people make mistakes, and that sometimes people just aren’t good at their job. If that person is an office manager or barista, we’ll all survive. When your job is to keep the leader of the free world breathing, you don’t get to make oopsies.

Now would be a good time to start changing all that, for Biden to summon his inner Harry Truman, and say the buck does stop with him, and that he does have the backbone to let people go when their incompetence puts America and the lives of its citizens at risk.

But we all know very well that that isn’t going to happen. Once again, there will be no consequences, no transparency, and no accountability, just the same shameful pat on the back, and you’ll do better next time we always see. America deserves much, much better than this. Corey Comperatore, who was murdered under the not-so watchful eye of the Secret Service certainly does, as did the three other victims, including Trump.

It didn’t seem to be a coincidence that when Donald Trump made his surprise appearance on Monday at the Republican National Convention, his Secret Service detail looked much different. Members were taller, more male, and more like law enforcement and less like a Benetton ad. But it is too little too late.

Secret Service Agent Protecting Biden Granddaughter Fires at Car Thieves as DC Crime Wave Surges

A Secret Service agent protecting one of President Joe Biden’s five granddaughters shot at three unidentified individuals who were trying to break into a government-owned car in Washington, D.C., just before midnight.

The Secret Service agent was part of a detail assigned to Naomi Biden Neal, 29, who is presidential son Hunter Biden’s oldest daughter and was married at the White House in November.

The three would-be thieves attempted to break into a “parked and unoccupied government vehicle” in the Georgetown neighborhood of Northwest Washington late Sunday night, the Secret Service said in a written statement on the incident. The government vehicle is one used by the Secret Service detail assigned to Naomi Biden Neal. At least one Secret Service agent reported firing at the offenders, although he said he believes “no one was struck.” All three offenders bolted from the scene in a red vehicle, and agents began coordinating a “regional lookout” for them.

The attempted car theft is part of a pandemic of carjackings and car break-ins in the nation’s capital. The Washington Examiner reported that carjackings and other car-related crime increased nearly 250% in the past five years. Such criminal incidents are up 102% since October last year, according to statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident involving the Secret Service wasn’t the only such vehicle-related D.C. crime in the past few days. A white Ford F-250 pickup truck with government tags was carjacked at 6 a.m. Monday, less than two miles from the U.S. Capitol building.

Alan Henney, who tweets about D.C. crime, reported that guns were stolen from two different vehicles in Penn Quarter and Chinatown, near Ford’s Theatre and the National Portrait Gallery. He also reported that four people were shot Sunday, one during a carjacking, in Northwest Washington.

The drivers of two different Uber vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a BMW, were carjacked over the weekend. In early October, Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, was carjacked near his home in DC by three men brandishing guns.

The D.C. Council has promoted “soft-on-crime” policies over the past few years, critics argue. In January, the 13-member council passed legislation called the Revised Criminal Code Act to reduce maximum sentences, eliminate most mandatory minimum sentences, and expand “rights to jury trials” for those accused of misdemeanors.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, vetoed the bill. But the council, made up of Democrats except for two independents, overrode it within a week. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, a Democrat, said the bill would “improve public safety and provide long overdue clarity and fairness in our justice system.”

In early March, the U.S. Senate voted to overturn the changes to the D.C. criminal code, with all Republicans and 33 Democrats supporting that. Biden then signed that override into law. Since then, the mayor’s office has begun providing Apple Air Tags, a remote tracking device, to D.C. residents so they could track their car in the event of a carjacking. One victim later told The Washington Post that police officers refused to do anything with the tracking data as her car was being stolen; officers told her, “We can’t pursue.”

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson told Congress in March that, despite the public’s “perception” that the city  is unsafe, “there is not a crime crisis” in the nation’s capital.

After Cuellar was attacked, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, posted that it was “Time to invoke Article I, Section 8, Clause 17” of the U.S. Constitution. The clause gives Congress unilateral authority over the District of Columbia. Lee elaborated, writing: “D.C. is dangerous. Something’s gone terribly wrong here—for far too long. Congress has the sole power to make D.C.’s laws, and must intervene.”

A Heritage Foundation report by legal fellows Zack Smith and Cully Stimson found that the District of Columbia’s  effort to rewrite its criminal code benefited criminals at the expense of victims and public safety. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.)

Heritage’s July 12 report called on Congress to “enact commonsense solutions” such as those that helped “drive down crime rates in the 1990s.”

Not just cocaine: Secret Service reveals another banned substance was found in Biden’s White House

‘And it just poses the question: What kind of people is Joe Biden bringing into the White House?’ Boebert added

The Secret Service found marijuana twice in the White House in 2022, long before cocaine was located in the West Wing. The Secret Service revealed the information to members of Congress during a classified briefing on the investigation into cocaine found in the West Wing over the Fourth of July weekend and confirmed the pot discoveries to Fox News Digital.

Possessing less than two ounces of marijuana is not a crime in Washington, D.C., but the substance is still not allowed on federal property — including the White House. A spokesperson for the Secret Service told Fox News Digital that agents had found “small amounts of marijuana” on two separate occasions, in July and September of last year.

SECRET SERVICE CLOSES WHITE HOUSE COCAINE INVESTIGATION, SAYS IT IS ‘NOT ABLE’ TO IDENTIFY SUSPECT

“No one was arrested in these incidents, because the weight of the marijuana confiscated did not meet the legal threshold for federal charges or D.C. misdemeanor criminal charges, as the District of Columbia had decriminalized possession,” the Secret Service spokesperson said. “The marijuana was collected by officers and destroyed.”

The spokesperson told Fox News Digital that agents had found “less than .2 ounces of marijuana in both instances” and noted D.C.’s marijuana decriminalization. The Secret Service did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s follow-up questions, including on whether U.S. law prohibits illicit substances on federal property.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., told Fox News Digital following the classified briefing that the area where cocaine had been found over the 4th of July weekend “should have had video surveillance,” especially since marijuana had been found twice in 2022 “on the White House property” under President Biden’s watch.

The Colorado Republican also told Fox News Digital that, during the briefing, she had inquired about specific security measures in place for the lockers where the cocaine was found. Boebert said the Secret Service had admitted that the key to the locker in question “is missing.” (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

“This probably is an area that should have had video surveillance, especially since this is not the first time that drugs have been found on the White House property since Biden has taken office,” she said.

“There should have been implementations made to ensure security at the White House already before this cocaine appeared,” Boebert said. It was not immediately clear where the marijuana had been located on White House grounds.

Boebert also said, “We did not have scandals when President Trump was in office to this degree.”

“And it just poses the question: What kind of people is Joe Biden bringing into the White House?” she added.

The Colorado Republican also told Fox News Digital that, during the briefing, she had inquired about specific security measures in place for the lockers where the cocaine had been found. Boebert said the Secret Service had admitted that the key to the locker in question “is missing.”

“There are 182 lockers in that foyer and currently … locker number 50 where the cocaine was found, that key is missing,” she said. “There were more than 500 people who went through the West Wing during the weekend of when this substance was found, when the cocaine was found in the White House, and none of those people who have come through are classified as suspects.”

“We do not know how many were tourists, individual citizens, or staffers, and they currently are not looking any further into those more than 500 people who entered that foyer of the West Wing during that weekend,” she said. “Instead, they are quickly wanting to close this investigation and move on to the next Biden crime crisis.”

Boebert also told Fox News that she had learned that “there are no logs of the lockers. There’s no video surveillance of the lockers.”

Joe Biden sits in Corvette in 2020

Boebert told Fox News Digital that the area the cocaine was found in “should have had video surveillance,” especially since marijuana was found twice in 2022 “on the White House property” under President Biden’s watch. (Joe Biden for President)

“The only thing that the Secret Service did was conduct background searches for past drug use or conviction of the over 500 individuals that came through that weekend,” Boebert said. “They did not go further back in time, nor did their investigation produce any results to flag an individual person.”

She added, “I believe that every staffer who went into the White House that weekend… should be drug tested.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., defended the Secret Service, saying that testing hundreds of potential suspects for drugs would be “a massively disproportionate and overblown response that would violate people’s civil liberties.”

“I mean, if there were small amounts of marijuana or cocaine found somewhere in the Capitol Complex, we would not want to drug test everybody who works here,” he said.

Hunter Biden Casts Doubt On Secret Service Involvement In Gun Incident, Contradicting His Own Text Messages From 2019

Hunter Biden said he does not believe that the Secret Service got involved in a search for his handgun after his sister-in-law and then-girlfriend threw it in a trash can in October 2018. Biden’s comments in a CBS “This Morning” interview on Monday would appear to conflict with text messages he reportedly sent several months after the incident in which he referred to Secret Service involvement in the search for his gun.

“I don’t know whether the Secret Service were, or why they would be. I don’t think that’s true, to my knowledge,” Biden said in an interview with CBS News regarding reports that the Secret Service intervened in the Oct. 23, 2018 incident.

Politico reported last month that Hallie Biden, the sister-in-law to Hunter, reported his gun missing to police in Wilmington, Delaware. Hallie, who was also in a romantic relationship with Hunter at the time, said that she threw his gun in a trash can behind a supermarket after taking it from his vehicle, according to Politico. She reported the firearm missing after she went back to the store to try to retrieve it. Delaware state police, the FBI and Secret Service took part in the search for the gun, according to Politico.

Politico also reported that the owner of a gun store in Delaware said that Secret Service agents requested paperwork regarding the sale of the firearm to Biden. The store owner said that he refused to provide documents to the Secret Service, fearing that the agency would try to cover up the incident, according to Politico. He later sent paperwork to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The Secret Service and White House said last week that there were no records showing that Secret Service personnel were involved in the investigation, Politico reported. Senate Republicans noted in a letter to the Secret Service last week that the agency was not providing protection to the Biden family at the time of the incident.

But Biden referred to the Secret Service in a text message he reportedly sent several months after the incident.

“She stole the gun out of my trunk lock box and threw it in a garbage can full to the top at Jansens [sic]. Then told me it was my problem to deal with,” Biden wrote in the text message, according to The New York Post, which obtained a trove of Biden’s communications before the 2020 election.

“Then when the police the FBI the secret service came on the scene she said she took it from me because she was scared I would harm myself due to my drug and alcohol problem and our volatile relationship and that she was afraid for the kids,” according to the Post.

Biden was not asked in the CBS interview about his text messages. His attorney did not respond to a request for comment. Biden said that Hallie took the gun out of “concern that I would hurt myself or do something.”

“In the moment we knew that the gun was lost, that Hallie had thrown it into a trashcan and I told her that she can’t do that,” he said.

Hillary Throws a B*TCH FIT–Chucks a BIBLE at the Back of This Person’s Head

Screen Shot 2016-06-21 at 10.04.16 AMThis could be part of the reason why Hillary is trying to stop the media appearances of this Secret Service agent. Check it.

Hillary Clinton once threw a Bible at the back of a Secret Service agent’s head, part of a pattern of unhinged rage that the now-presumptive Democratic nominee exhibited, as exposed for the first time in former Secret Service agent Gary Byrne’s grueling insider account of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Byrne’s forthcoming book Crisis of Character—in which he details how the Clintons operated during his time in the U.S. Secret Service, where he protected the first couple for eight years in the White House in the 1990s. During three of those years, he was posted right outside the Oval Office. The book comes out next week.

“The First Lady had a different sort of liveliness,” Byrne writes in an excerpt obtained exclusively by Breitbart News. “She once threw a Bible at an agent on her detail, hitting him in the back of the head. He bluntly let her know it wasn’t acceptable. He told me that story himself.”

Byrne goes on to report that for Secret Service agents, being assigned to Hillary Clinton’s detail “was a form of punishment handed down by passive-aggressive middle management.”

This pattern of rage from Clinton was exhibited, Byrne wrote in another part of the book, on a regular basis the more “at home she felt in the White House,” as Hillary “vented on everyone” and “it got worse” as time went on.

“Most of us knew to brace for her inevitable eruptions,” Byrne wrote. “They didn’t happen every day, but behind closed doors we learned about them fast. In public, she was everyone’s best friend. Privately, she was her normal self.”Vote In One and you get them all

At one point, Hillary Clinton—Byrne wrote—even told a Secret Service agent to “Go f— yourself” after telling another to “Go to hell!” Byrne wrote:

One day, UD [Uniformed Division] officers met to review events at their respective postS. A bewildered new officer arrived. ‘Hey you’ll never believe it, but I passed the First lady and she told me to go to hell!’ A second young officer responded, ‘You think that’s bad? I passed her on the West Colonnade, and all I said was ‘Good morning, First Lady.’ She told me, ‘Go f— yourself.’ ‘Are you serious?’ ‘Go f— yourself!’ He imitated her, pointing a finger.

At first, the unit’s sergeant challenged the story “but another officer soon corroborated” it. “Our sergeant was speechless,” Byrne writes. “We assured the rookie that this wasn’t the job’s normal atmosphere—at least, not under the previous administration. The sergeant fumed and called the watch commander, who pushed things up the Secret Service chain of command, who said they’d forward it to Chief of Staff Leon Panetta.”

At that point, the Secret Service actually “circulated a memo reminding everyone to report any ‘unusual’ First Family interaction to their supervisors.”

“The new guy (who had earned a Purple Heart fighting the Clintons’ war in Somalia) got an apology for the First Lady’s actions—but not directly from her of course,” Byrne writes.

In another excerpt obtained exclusively by Breitbart News, Byrne recounts an episode in which Hillary Clinton—in a screaming, obscenity-laced tantrum wherein she referred to Secret Service agents as “assholes”—vented to Bill Clinton that she thought the Secret Service was out to get them. The book reads:

‘They f—ed us, Bill!’ Hillary screamed. I stifled a laugh. The president tried his best to calm her down. He couldn’t. Hillary Clinton possessed no perspective. ‘We need to get rid of these assholes, Bill!’ She thought she was being tough—in command—but the issue commanded her. She fumed that the Secret Service’s Uniformed Division, my branch, disloyal leftovers from Papa Bush, conspired against the administration. ‘They’ve had it out for us from the beginning!’ she kept yelling.Hillary tryant

Byrne detailed how Hillary Clinton would introduce him to VIPs as “one of my favorite officers, Gary Byrne” while putting “her hand on my shoulder for good measure,” even though she really didn’t care about the Secret Service agents. “But we were like furniture to them,” he wrote of how the Clintons treated the Secret Service.

“Hillary’s antics made my job interesting,” Byrne wrote. “She’d explode in my face without reservation or decorum…”

Byrne even wrote, “on the whim” of Hillary Clinton’s “wrath,” that “careers were made or broken.”

Secret Service agents: Pope’s life at risk in U.S.

Pope Francis

NEW YORK – Members of the president’s Secret Service detail have confided to WND concern that they cannot adequately protect Pope Francis in the United States under current plans that include allowing the pope to ride through crowds next week in Washington and New York in an open vehicle.

The agents’ concerns about the Sept. 22-27 papal visit are compounded, they say, by an ongoing environment in which politically correct management decisions compromise the elite recruitment and excellence for which the Secret Service was distinguished when it was managed by the Department of Treasury. The Secret Service is now under the Transportation Security Administration, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security.

WND has confirmed that several Secret Service agents currently assigned to papal security for the upcoming visit are seeking to transfer to other federal government agencies, because discipline and morale has deteriorated to dangerous levels under current TSA management.

“Secret Service are fleeing in droves seeking security positions in other government agencies,” one Secret Service source for this article told WND on condition of anonymity.

“It’s not just those on POTUS detail, it’s the specially trained Secret Service, those we are least able to lose, who are leaving in record numbers. And the pressure put on us by the security restraints of the pope’s visit aren’t helping the situation at all,” the source said.

Another Secret Service source noted Francis is “a pope who wants to be seen by the people.”

Pope threat
Published by Islamic State claiming they were going to execute the Pope.

He wants to mingle with the crowd, kiss the babies and be accessible to the sick and elderly,” the source said. “With what Vatican security is demanding we do politically, protecting the pope in the U.S. visit is going to be a nightmare.”

pope threat ISIS
Another published threat by Islamic State against Pope Francis

Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, head of the House Homeland Security Committee, disclosed Sunday that the United States had disrupted a plot against Pope Francis in advance of his trip. Fox News provided more details Tuesday, reporting a 15-year-old inspired by ISIS was arrested in the Philadelphia area in August.

‘Security disaster

Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent on presidential detail, told WND he shares the concerns.

“Because of the way Pope Francis wants his security handled, with a more discrete presence, the pope’s visit to the United States is a security disaster,” said Bongino, a Fox News commentator and author of the WND Books bestseller “Life Inside the Bubble: Why a Top-Ranked Secret Service Agent Walked Away from It All.”

“There is no person in the world with a higher threat profile than the pope,” he said. “If Vatican security insists on the pope riding through crowds in an open Popemobile with minimal security presence running alongside, the Secret Service concern is legitimate.”

Get Dan Bongino’s insider expose,”Life Inside the Bubble: Why a Top-Ranked Secret Service Agent Walked Away from It All” from the WND Superstore.

Bongino also agreed that Secret Service morale has deteriorated under DHS management.

“When I first joined the Secret Service back in 1999, people leaving for reasons other than retirement were unheard of,” Bongino noted. “Under DHS, management attrition has been through the roof when people don’t feel they are being backed up by management, and there’s no question morale has gone downhill.” Bongino said that at DHS, “too many of the Secret Service management are worried about their second careers, planning to leave DHS and set up multi-million dollar security companies,.”

“So your interests managing Secret Service under DHS have become not managing Secret Service, but not upsetting DHS,” he said.

Several of the Secret Service agents on POTUS detail speaking with WND for this article expressed their concern the mere publication of the article would trigger reprisals from DHS management.

“Every time an article critical of the Secret Service shows up in print, we get hammered by DHS management,” one of the agents serving as a source for this article told WND. “Even when the story is about the guys at the top of DHS management screwing up with the Secret Service, the blow-back is always on the rank-and-file, including the Secret Service who put their lives on the line protecting the president.”

Despite several requests, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee responsible for Secret Service oversight, declined to comment for this article.

Papal events

According to the Vatican press office, a Jeep Wrangler, manufactured by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, with a glass-front roof and open sides, similar to the Popemobile that Pope Francis used in Ecuador in July, was shipped in August to the Secret Service for safekeeping. “The Vatican’s decisions on the pope’s security are putting the Secret Service in an unworkable situation,” Bongino said. “The Vatican is setting up the Secret Service to fail, and if anything happens to the pope, people are going to blame the Secret Service, not Vatican security. If I were directing the Secret Service, I would take the political risk and issue an ultimatum insisting to Vatican security that we at the Secret Service were going to set the security rules for the pope’s visit, otherwise we cannot insure a safe environment for him in the United States,” Bongino said.

According to the official schedule, the pope will ride in the Popemobile at the following events:

  • In Washington, D.C., Sept. 23, after leaving the White House, he will travel in the Popemobile along 15th Street, Constitution Avenue and 17th Street N.W., with people invited to line the streets around the Ellipse and the National Mall. The Secret Service plans to open gates for the Ellipse and National Mall from 4 a.m. until 10 a.m.
  • In New York City, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m., Pope Francis is scheduled to travel via motorcade through Central Park, traveling on Central Park’s West Drive between 72nd and 60th Street. Tickets will be given away to residents of New York state over the age of 18. Gates are open for security screening between noon and 3 p.m.
  • In Philadelphia, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m., the pope plans to attend the Festival of Families, to take place on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The family-themed event includes exhibits open to the public, with no special provisions for tickets or screening so far announced.
  • In Philadelphia, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m., Francis is scheduled to celebrate the closing mass for the World Meeting of Families 2015. Some 400,000 are expected to attend the event, which is open to the public.pope threat news

‘Not since JFK’

Bongino wrote an article published Sept. 2 in Conservative Review, titled “Why the Pope’s Visit Will Be a Security Nightmare.”

“My experience in situations such as this, where protectees prefer a low-key approach, (Hillary Clinton’s U.S. Senate run in New York comes to mind) is that security takes a back seat to concerns about the ‘optics’ of the security,” he wrote.

Worrying about how the security operation ‘looks’ rather than how the security operation functions, is a recipe for failure, and I wish the Secret Service protectees understood this before declaring that they want to be more ‘accessible.’”

Bongino wrote that the Secret Service security model is “accustomed to working with crowds and granting those crowds accessibility, within reason.”

“With the current macro-threat environment (threats not specific to the Pope) from ISIS, Al-Qaeda and its affiliates, and other terrorist groups, combined with the number of very specific threats from these groups, and other independent actors looking to do harm to the Pope, this is not time for concerns about ‘visuals’ and ‘optics,’ it’s time to focus on a responsible, comprehensive security plan that will ensure that the world’s billions of Catholics can enjoy the visit and not concern themselves with the Pope’s safety.”

In December, WND reported a Secret Service expert’s worry about President Obama’s safety. ” Vincent Michael Palamara noted that JFK’s fateful journey through the streets of Dallas, Texas, in November 1963 was the last time the Secret Service allowed a president of the United States to ride in an open limo in public.

In June, WND reported from Turin, Italy, the pope’s arrival in an open-sided Popemobile at the Piazza Vittorio Veneto during the Shroud of Turin exhibition to celebrate mass before a crowd estimated at over 30,000 people. The crowd had not gone through screening, there was minimal security running alongside the vehicle and no apparent security in the open windows of the tall buildings lining both sides of the square.

‘A PETULANT CHILD’: Former Secret Service Agent Blasts Obama For Blaming Service For Skipping Paris March

Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino blasted President Obama’s decision to blame security concerns for his decision not to attend an anti-terrorism rally in Paris. The White House blamed security concerns for Obama’s decision not to attend the “March Of Unity” in Paris after a deadly Islamic terrorist attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The Secret Service said that it was never asked to prepare for a presidential visit to Paris. obama-liar4-266x189

Bongino, who served in the Secret Service under presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama before galvanizing conservative voters with recent Maryland Senate and congressional runs, told The Daily Caller that Obama blamed the Service because he knew they couldn’t fight back against him in the press.

“He knows there’s nothing the Secret Service can say. They don’t want to hurt the relationship so as a matter of decorum they can’t say anything,” Bongino said. “I imagine what they’re really thinking is, ‘Is this guy serious?’ It’s not an easy job. After the fence-jumper, morale’s not great over there now, but he still says something that is so obviously not true.”culture of deciet

“Just look at the Mandela funeral which was geometrically worse when it comes to threat and he went to that because he wanted to go. If the president wants to go he goes. The Secret Service doesn’t tell him he can’t go. That’s only in movies.”If his mouth is open he must be lying

“It’s not the first time. We had the White House tours incident. I’m not going to say he’s the first president to blame someone outside of his own executive office, but does he take responsibility for anything? Incorrigible is really the word for him. He acts like a child and no one outside of conservative media holds him to account. These people are forfeiting their lives for you… This guy is just acting like a petulant child.”Imperial President Obama

“My experience with his staff is they are just amateur hour,” Bongino added. “They don’t know what’s going on. There’s really only one channel to him: Valerie Jarrett. This doesn’t function like a regular White House…Instead of just doing what a responsible White House would do and say we blew it, they are completely incapable of acting like adults. It’s infuriating.”kingobamafingerconstitution-300x204

And what do other Secret Service agents think about it, according to Bongino?

“I think they’re so used to it at this point. I don’t think they’re capable anymore of being pissed off with this president. They do their jobs and just keep all this garbage out of it. You start to realize these guys are really getting screwed. They have no voice at all. The president tosses them around like a red-headed stepchild. Most of them know what’s going on but just block it out and put up a wall around it.”

Nashville Police Refuse Secret Service Illegal Search of Obama Critic

MId Term drawing

The Secret Service agents had gone to a Nashville resident’s home to investigate Facebook comments the Tennessean had made against the President.

Unsurprisingly, the Obama critic — who hadn’t violated any laws — wasn’t willing to come out of his home and be investigated by the federal government.

“He shoved the door in our face and went around the corner,” the Secret Service agent told the 911 operator. “Possibly, he had a gun in his hands.”

Of course, slamming a door in someone’s face isn’t against the law, and neither is having a weapon. The man, who’s a law-abiding gun owner, made no threats. He only demanded to see their warrant.

They didn’t bother to get one, but that inconvenient fact didn’t stop them. One of the agents asked the Nashville police sergeant to “wave a piece of paper” in order to fool the resident into believing they actually had obtained a warrant.comment 01

So, let’s recount this, shall we?Obamas Police State

  1. The Tennessean criticized the President in a non-threatening way… as is his First Amendment Constitutional right.
  2. The Tennessean had a gun to defend his home… as is his Second Amendment Constitutional right.
  3. The Tennessean asked to see a warrant… as is his Fourth Amendment Constitutional right.

None of these rights were respected by the Secret Service agents.

But you gotta love the Nashville Police.

Chief Steve Anderson wrote a letter to the former Nashville Secret Service Director Julia Pierson and Assistant Director A.T. Smith detailing these abuses. “I think you can see that had the MNPD officers complied with the directive from the Secret Service agents,” he wrote, “There was likelihood for this event to have escalated into a serious and/or embarrassing situation for both of our agencies.”

He never heard back from Pierson, but Smith responded with a “condescending and dismissive” tone. When Anderson went to their office to discuss whether they thought it was right to wave around a piece of paper to pretend they had a warrant, the Secret Service agent allegedly answered, “I don’t know. I’m not a lawyer.”

It’s good to see local authorities standing up to a corrupt, bloated federal government hell-bent on taking away our individual rights. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tennessee, one of the committee members who received the letter, thinks this is an outrage.

“There’s already a lot of fodder to attack the Secret Service with, and this will be more,” he said, before saying that the Secret Service’s tactics were grievous Constitutional violations.

Here’s the best part of the story. The Chief Anderson says that his officers are no longer allowed to work with the Secret Service unless they get a directive from the top.2

Why? He wants to make sure his officers aren’t asked to engage in questionable and possibly unconstitutional activities.

Kudos to the Nashville police for standing up to a bloated, corrupt federal government and saying, simply, “no more.”

Dem on Secret Service director: ‘I think this lady has to go’

Obamacare

By Mario Trujillo / October 01, 2014, 08:13 am

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/219418-cummings-on-secret-service-director-i-think-this-lady-has-to-go

Throw-under-the-busRep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Wednesday suggested Secret Service Director Julia Pierson should resign, saying President Obama is not well served under her leadership.

The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee said it was “very difficult for me to sleep last night” after the director’s testimony before the committee on Tuesday

Cummings said he came away from the meeting “extremely disappointed.”

“I’ve come to the conclusion that my confidence and my trust in this director, Ms. Pierson, has eroded. And I do not feel comfortable with her in that position,” he said on MSNBC.

That is a swing from just a day earlier, when he told reporters the “jury’s still out” on her tenure.

His comments were even more blunt during a radio interview with Roland Martin on Wednesday.

“I think this lady has to go,” Cummings reportedly said, referring to Pierson.

Cummings isn’t the only lawmaker calling for Pierson to resign or be fired.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) also said she should go in an interview with Fox on Tuesday night.

“I think it’s time that she be fired by the president of the United States or that she resign,” he said.

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), a member of the Oversight Committee also called on Pierson to resign.

“I do not have confidence, especially given her answers of yesterday and the revelations of Atlanta, and then this continuing series of events, that it is probably best that she does step down,” Collins said on MSNBC on Wednesday.

He also criticized Pierson over a press release she admitted approving that failed to disclose how far the intruder made it into the White House.

“I was appalled by her answer to that question,” he said. “How could the director of the Secret Service approve a statement that was a lie?”

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said on MSNBC Tuesday that he is not ready to call for Pierson’s resignation, but called the Atlanta elevator incident “jaw-dropping.”

“I want to give her an opportunity to complete her review and to provide, I hope, cogent recommendations for reform and corrective action,” he said. “But I have to say, it is an open question at the moment whether frankly she can continue in that job with any kind of competence.”

Pierson received a grilling on Capitol Hill over the security breach Sept. 19, when an intruder jumped the fence and made his way into the White House before being apprehended by agents.

New details emerged Monday about that incident. Cummings said those details have led to an erosion of public confidence in the director.

“No matter how wonderful Ms. Pierson may be, the public’s confidence is eroding,” he said on MSNBC. “There used to be a time where, if you thought about the Secret Service, you not dare do anything that might even make them think about you harming the president.”

Other news emerged after the hearing, including reports that an armed security contractor with a criminal record was allowed on an elevator with Obama during a Sept. 16 trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cummings said it seems the public is learning new stories about the Secret Service every week.

Cummings had expressed concern during the hearing that agents felt more comfortable talking to members of Congress rather than to their superiors.

“That has got to change,” he said at the time.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for an independent investigation into the events surrounding the incident. Cummings and committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) are expected to ask the Department of Homeland Security to investigate.

police_stateIf the United States is a police state, then the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is its national police force, with all the brutality, ineptitude and corruption such a role implies. In fact, although the DHS’ governmental bureaucracy may at times appear to be inept and bungling, it is ruthlessly efficient when it comes to building what the founders feared most — a standing army on American soil.

The third-largest federal agency behind the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense, the DHS — with its 240,000 full-time workers, $61 billion budget and sub-agencies that include the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) — has been aptly dubbed a “runaway train.” With good reason, a bipartisan bill to provide greater oversight and accountability into the DHS’ purchasing process has been making its way through Congress.

DHSA better plan would be to abolish the DHS altogether. The menace of a national police force, aka a standing army, vested with so much power cannot be overstated, nor can its danger be ignored. Indeed, as the following list shows, just about every nefarious deed, tactic or thuggish policy advanced by the government today can be traced back to the DHS, its police state mindset, and the billions of dollars it distributes to police agencies in the form of grants.

  • Militarizing police and SWAT teams. The DHS routinely hands out six-figure grants to enable local municipalities to purchase military-style vehicles, as well as a veritable war chest of weaponry, ranging from tactical vests, bomb-disarming robots, assault weapons and combat uniforms. This rise in military equipment purchases funded by the DHS has, according to analysts Andrew Becker and G.W. Schulz, “paralleled an apparent increase in local SWAT teams.”
  • Spying on activists, dissidents and veterans. In 2009, DHS released three infamous reports on right-wing and left-wing “Extremism,” and another entitled Operation Vigilant Eagle, outlining a surveillance program targeting veterans. The reports collectively and broadly define extremists as individuals and groups “that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely.”
  • Stockpiling ammunition. DHS, along with other government agencies, has been stockpiling an alarming amount of ammunition in recent years, which only adds to the discomfort of those already leery of the government. As of 2013, DHS had 260 million rounds of ammo in stock, which averages out to between 1,300 to 1,600 rounds per officer. The U.S. Army, in contrast, has roughly 350 rounds per soldier.
  • Distributing license plate readers. DHS has already distributed more than $50 million in grants to enable local police agencies to acquire license plate readers, which rely on mobile cameras to photograph and identify cars, match them against a national database, and track their movements.
  • Tracking cellphones with Stingray devices. Distributed to local police agencies as a result of grants from the DHS, these Stingray devices enable police to track individuals’ cellphones — and their owners — without a court warrant or court order.
  • Carrying out military drills and lockdowns in American cities. Each year, DHS funds military-style training drills in cities across the country. These Urban Shield exercises, elaborately staged with their own set of professionally trained crisis actors playing the parts of shooters, bystanders and victims, fool law enforcement officials, students, teachers, bystanders and the media into thinking it’s a real crisis.
  • Using the TSA as an advance guard. The TSA now searches a variety of government and private databases, including things like car registrations and employment information, in order to track travelers before they ever get near an airport.
  • Carrying out soft target checkpoints. VIPR task forces, comprised of federal air marshals, surface transportation security inspectors, transportation security officers, behavior detection officers and explosive detection K-9 teams, have laid the groundwork for the government’s effort to secure so-called “soft” targets such as malls, stadiums, bridges, etc.
  • Conducting widespread spying networks using fusion centers. Data collecting agencies spread throughout the country, aided by the National Security Agency, fusions centers — of which there are at least 78 scattered around the U.S. — constantly monitor our communications, collecting and cataloguing everything from our Internet activity and web searches to text messages, phone calls and emails. This data is then fed to government agencies, which are now interconnected: The CIA to the FBI, the FBI to local police.
  • Carrying out Constitution-free border control searches. On orders from the DHS, the government’s efforts along the border have become little more than an exercise in police state power, ranging from aggressive checkpoints to the widespread use of drone technology, often used against American citizens traveling within the country.
  • Funding city-wide surveillance cameras. As Charlie Savage reports for the Boston Globe, the DHS has funneled “millions of dollars to local governments nationwide for purchasing high-tech video camera networks, accelerating the rise of a ‘surveillance society’ in which the sense of freedom that stems from being anonymous in public will be lost.”
  • Utilizing drones and other spybots. The DHS has been at the forefront of funding and deploying surveillance robots and drones for land, sea and air, including robots that resemble fish and tunnel-bots that can travel underground.

Comming Soon 02

It’s not difficult to see why the DHS has been described as a “wasteful, growing, fear-mongering beast.” If it is a beast, however, it is a beast that is accelerating our nation’s transformation into a police state through its establishment of a standing army, aka national police force.

SpyingThis, too, is nothing new. Historically, as I show in my book “A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State,” the establishment of a national police force has served as a fundamental and final building block for every totalitarian regime that has ever wreaked havoc on humanity, from Hitler’s all-too-real Nazi Germany to George Orwell’s fictional Oceania. Whether fictional or historical, however, the calling cards of these national police agencies remain the same: brutality, inhumanity, corruption, intolerance, rigidity and bureaucracy — in other words, evil
