America: Running Toward Sodom

In 1996, Robert Bork wrote Slouching Toward Gomorrah, a critical expose of the culture war. Bork pointed to the acceptance of baby sacrifice as a sure sign that our culture was in decline and headed toward divine judgment. His prophetic warning was ignored by Americans. Teddy Kennedy and the Democrats had succeeded in characterizing judge Bork, nominated by Ronald Reagan for the Supreme Court, as a racist.
Of course, none of the accusations had any merit. The Democrat’s real problem with Bork, just as with Scalia and Thomas, was that he could not find a right to kill one’s child in the constitution. Unable to refute his legal opinions, his opponents resorted to character assassination. With the aid of the media and the arbiters of culture in Hollywood, the Democrats succeeded in derailing Bork’s nomination.
In his book Bork advanced the hypothesis that most Americans were blissfully ignorant of the path that the culture was on. He believed that our comfortable abundance was shielding us from the truth and thus he characterized us as “slouching.” His implication was that most of us were unaware. I think he had enough faith in his countrymen to believe that if they only understood the danger of where the cultural shift was taking them that they would reverse course. Today, after two successive elections where Americans endorsed a man promising to “fundamentally transform” America, I no longer share his faith in my fellow citizens. To approve of a man who prays, “God bless Planned Parenthood,” is to spit in God’s face.
Today, most Americans reject the concept of a sovereign deity to whom we are accountable. These days, most of us adhere to the satanic motto, “Do what thou wilt.” We are running full speed toward Sodom. Our culture exalts sodomy. Our Supreme Court has legalized same sex marriage and this week our Attorney General announced that federal employees involved in same sex marriages will be afforded all of the rights of heterosexual couples. Our entertainment industry romanticizes sodomy. Our schools teach children that same sex attraction is “normal.” Our corporations enforce diversity training that tells employees that they must “celebrate” a co-worker’s choice to engage in sodomy. The media, the entertainment priests and political leaders are castigating the Russians for passing a law that prohibits homosexuals from propagandizing children. For this they are labeled as “anti-gay rights.” Do we believe that sodomites should have a right to proselytize our children?
As a Christian, I am called to love sinners and share the forgiveness that Christ offers. Sodomy is no worse than any other sin. Gluttony, lying, stealing, lust, covetousness, adultery and a host of other human transgressions are all due the same penalty. Loving the sinner does not mean accepting and honoring the sin. We haven’t yet seen organized campaigns to force society to accept thieves.
Make no mistake, the agenda of the homosexual rights movement has little to do with rights. Their ultimate goal is to stigmatize Christians as bigots and to de-legitimize their role in society. We are seeing evidence of this agenda in action, where Christian churches are being forced by the government to serve and hire individuals proudly proclaiming their sin. Should churches also be required to hire alcoholics and child molesters in their schools?
The exaltation of sodomy is not the only sign that our culture has become debased. We have accepted and celebrated the killing of unwanted children. Our streets are not safe to walk. One is subject to a random “knock out” as part of a game. Often, the victims are the aged and the weak. Young ladies cavort on television “twerking” (masturbating) on a pole and Hollywood calls it art. The scripture describes our society as the one of the end of the age:
Know this also, that in the last days grievous times will be at hand. For men will be self-lovers, money-lovers, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, unyielding, false accusers, without self-control, savage, despisers of good, traitors, reckless, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God….(2Ti 3:1-4)
Christ offers forgiveness to individual sinners who repent and turn to Him. But, God judges nations for their choices. The ash heap of history is littered with great nations that have rejected God. This country needs godly leaders that will point us back to God and His ways. Fearful liberals will claim that I’m calling for a Taliban style theocracy. I am not. No government of men is capable of turning men’s hearts to God. Only the grace of God and willing people can do that. If we fail to receive His grace, we shall reap what we have sown. Yellowstone is brewing.
