There is little evidence that the founders advocated for a free-for-all, open-door immigration policy.

From the very beginning, even in the absence of immigration law, the founders knew America had to set boundaries. Their top three concerns were the qualifications, assimilation, and allegiance of newcomers. The founders emphasized the moral character and contributions newcomers would bring.

Not only should new migrants have good moral character, but they should also place “high importance to the respectability and character of the American name” and do their best to “preserve its good fame from injury,” as Rep. James Jackson, a Democratic-Republican from Georgia, said in 1790. The founding generation didn’t want convicts and criminals as new immigrants.

George Washington preferred skilled new immigrants, such as “useful mechanics and some particular descriptions of men or professions.” James Madison wanted the “worthy part of mankind to come and settle amongst us,” so they can “increase the wealth and strength of the community; and those who acquire the rights of citizenship, without adding to the strength or wealth of the community are not the people we are in want of.”

How can a new immigrant increase the wealth and strength of a community? Rep. John Laurance clarified:

Every person who comes among us must do one or the other; if he brings money, or other property with him, he evidently increases the general mass of wealth, and if he brings an able body, his labor will be productive of national wealth, and an addition to our domestic strength. Consequently, every person, rich or poor, must add to our wealth and strength, in a greater or less degree.

Assimilation Strengthens and Protects

The United States was founded upon specific ideas and moral principles, as expressed by the eloquent words of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson believed that “it is for the happiness of those united in society to harmonize as much as possible in matters which they must of necessity transact together.”

He feared that if new immigrants believed different ideas, then “with their language, they will transmit [them] to their children. In proportion to their numbers, they will share with us the legislation. They will infuse into it their spirit, warp and bias its direction, and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass.”

Benjamin Franklin shared Jefferson’s concerns. Some people today accuse Benjamin Franklin of being anti-immigration because of the disparaging words he said about German immigrants. In fact, Franklin was anything but opposed to immigration. He published the first German newspaper in America, the Philadelphische Zeitung, in 1732Franklin was not against immigration; he was concerned that a lack of assimilation would be harmful to immigrants’ happiness and damning to the unity and longevity of the republic.

George Washington expressed a similar concern: that immigration does not benefit America when immigrants congregate and “retain their language, habits and principles (good or bad) which they bring with them.”

Instead, he firmly believed that new immigrants or their descendants should, “by an intermixture with our people … get assimilated to our customs, measures and laws: in a word, soon become one people.”

Immigrants Must Pledge Allegiance

No matter what drives them to America, some immigrants retain residual loyalty to their countries and cultures of birth. To become Americans, the founders believed immigrants needed to give up prior allegiances and pledge an oath of fidelity to the U.S. In Alexander Hamilton’s words:

The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on the love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education, and family.

John Quincy Adams, in an 1819 letter to Moritz von Furstenwarther, a German citizen who was considering moving to the U.S. and had asked Adams for a job, stated that the U.S. is a land “not of privileges, but of equal rights.” Thus, Adams warned Furstenwarther that new immigrants like him:

Must cast off the European skin, never to resume it. They must look forward to their posterity, rather than backward to their ancestors; they must be sure that whatever their own feelings may be, those of their children will cling to the prejudices of this country, and will partake of that proud spirit.

Citizenship Isn’t Cheap

While some founders believed an oath of allegiance and a declaration to stay in America were sufficient for citizenship, others did not want to give out citizenship too cheaply.

They pointed out that some foreign sailors had voted in Philadelphia’s assembly elections after taking oaths of allegiance and then left America, having never intended to stay. This kind of practice not only results in election fraud but also threatens the “safety of a republic” because a foreigner who rejects American principles and ideas would vote against them.

Therefore, some founders thought “some security for their [immigrants’] fidelity and allegiance was requisite besides the bare oath.” The additional security the founders sought was property ownership or residency.

Property ownership has been used to distinguish citizens from aliens since the Roman Empire. Some founders wanted to “see the title of a citizen of America as highly venerated and respected as was that of a citizen of old Rome.”

During the House of Representatives debate on immigration law in Philadelphia in 1790, the majority of the founders regarded it as essential that an individual have a period of residency in the U.S. prior to gaining citizenship. Residency achieved two purposes, according to Rep. Michael Stone:

First, that he should have an opportunity of knowing the circumstances of our Government, and in consequence thereof, shall have admitted the truth of the principles we hold. Second, that he shall have acquired a taste for this kind of Government. And in order that both these things may take place, in such a full manner as to make him worthy of admission into our society.

Founders extensively debated how long residency should be. Some suggested two years, while others suggested five years or even longer. But all agreed the residency requirement should be long enough to “give a man an opportunity of esteeming the Government from knowing its intrinsic value,” which “was essentially necessary to assure us of a man’s becoming a good citizen.”

Hamilton, the most famous immigrant to America, opposed limiting any congressional office to either native-born Americans or immigrants who met the residency requirement. People suspected later that he was trying to make himself eligible for the U.S. presidency.

Hamilton’s actual argument at the Constitutional Convention showed he was more concerned about ordinary immigrants. He pointed out, “Persons in Europe of moderate fortunes will be fond of coming here, where they will be on a level with the first citizens. I move that the section be so altered as to require merely citizenship and inhabitancy.”

The majority overruled Hamilton’s proposal by requiring future U.S. House Representatives to meet a seven-year residency requirement, U.S. senators a nine-year residency, and presidents a 14-year residency.

School Sends Home Permission Slip for Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance! Updated with Response from the Leon County School District!

waving flagBy Onan Coca August 22, 2016

In what is perhaps the latest example of the downfall of American culture and civics, one Florida public school has taken to sending a permission slip home to parents during the first week of school notifying parents that they can request for their child to not participate in the daily “Pledge of Allegiance”.

This image was shared by Micah Brienen of this past week, and it has since gone viral, reaching thousands and causing quite the stir on social media. He was understandably shocked and outraged that this was what our nation had come to saying, “My niece brought this home from school today…What is happening to our country?!?” Later he wrote, “The Pledge of Allegiance opt out waiver is part of the Leon County Student Handbook in Tallahassee, Florida. leonschools.net

This particular waiver was brought home by my niece from Killearn Lakes Elementary School. The parents are required to sign and return to confirm they received!!

POA Request

This is simply the latest step in the left’s war on every cultural value of the American conservative. They’ve declared war on our churches, our families, our morality, our patriotism, our priorities, our sexuality, and now… they’re working to corrupt the minds and hearts of the most impressionable in our society, our children.

Mr. Brienen replied to the outpouring of support and agreement on his Facebook page saying:

Man I am overwhelmed by the support I have received on my post regarding The Pledge of Allegiance…thousands of shares & my inbox has been flooded with positive messages from people across the country. Never in my life have I been more encouraged to be an American citizen and Patriot. Also, sadly, it has never been more clear that some people have no idea what the progressive movement is and how it has taken over our education system.
It is so important we STAND UP for our country and what is right.
#GodBlessAmerica

Dear readers, as tax paying citizens and (some of you) the parents of school aged children, it is incumbent on us to take back our schools and end the plague of political correctness and illogic that has befallen them. Get active in your local communities, elect strong conservative leaders to local positions, and then demand that they hire faculty and staff who reflect your community’s values and not the values of some far-off leftist in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, or New York City. It’s time we take back our schools and secure a better future for our children.

If you’d like to contact the Leon County school district, here’s the info:

The Superintendent of Schools is Jackie Pons. Her direct phone number is 850-487-7147 and email communityinfo@leonachools.net. She is up for reelection this year against a great American and U.S. army Vet Rocky Hanna. http://www.rockyhanna.com/

UPDATE:

Leon County Schools have replied to our article in the hopes of quelling some of the furor surrounding their decision to send home the Pledge notice. Below is their full response:

A couple of items in regards to your post about the pledge in Leon Schools:

1) This is a response to a Florida law voted on by the Florida Legislature and signed by Governor Rick Scott. Leon Schools is required to comply with the law. Florida Statute 1003.44 dictates to all school districts in Florida that, “each student shall be informed by a written notice published in the student handbook or a similar publication pursuant to s. 1006.07(2) that the student has the right not to participate in reciting the pledge.” More info on the law can be found here: http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm

2) The form that you reference was a form to be signed if a parent wanted to opt their student out of the pledge…not the other way around.

Hope this helps,

Leon Schools Communications Staff

While I understand, and I think anyone who looked at the form can see that it is an “opt-out” form, there is a problem with the first part of their explanation. The state law requires something as simple as a line notice in the student handbook, instead Leon County Schools chose to send home a separate, page-long notification about the pledge. The very fact that this is now something that Florida’s public schools are doing speaks to the disastrous turn our culture has taken regarding patriotism and our schools.

Hollywood star caught on tape teaching his kid something awesome about America

waving flagby Wilson Thursday, May 28, 2015

It’s kind of sad that a video like this out of Hollywood is an exception rather than the norm, but that doesn’t make the moment any less touching. Chris Pratt, star of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Jurassic World’, spent Memorial Day teaching his son the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s something we all take for granted, but we don’t often see the moments where we learn something so important to our lives as Americans caught on camera. “Meant to post this on Memorial Day but I was in China and my phone wasn’t working. I’m proud to be American. I’m blessed to get to travel the world!” Chris wrote on Facebook.

The video went mega-viral after he posted, and has already racked up over a million views.

The Pledge of Allegiance is Political?

Now, I have heard it all! CBS Sports banned a commercial with a little girl reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The ad promoted something very I LOVE AMERICAAmerican, “The Rodeo,” around September 11th. The little girl in the commercial was the granddaughter of the owner of the company running the ad. He though it was a really cool idea.

Well, the PC police at CBS Sports had other ideas. At first I thought “here we go again.” It has the words “under God” and we don’t want to offend the 20% of the country who doesn’t believe in God and we certainly don’t want them to feel left out. But that wasn’t the problem. Then I thought they must have been tight on time and a 15-second Pledge would have caused them to have to bump one of those commercials with a hamburger-eating, sauce-dripping, car-washing, bikini-clad woman who uses the top part of her bikini to wipe off the BBQ sauce. Nope. That wasn’t what happened either. OK, then WHAT?

The knuckleheads at CBS Sports decided that it was too political. Yup, the Pledge of Allegiance is too political. They won’t return any news organization’s phone calls. They’re CBS. Why should they?

This is just another example of an ungrateful company not understanding what the Pledge actually means!

For those of you who may need a refresher, the Pledge simply means that as Americans we will stand up for the American way of life, it’s freedoms and it’s opportunities and it’s liberties. Hey CBS! Those are the same ones that you used to build your companies! The American tax laws that you take advantage of and the security you feel, in most cases, going to other countries knowing that, as Americans, your company and employees have the United States of America’s resources to protect you!

Unlike some of those 3rd world nations who dictate what news gets broadcast and when and who you hire and fire and if they decide you’re not so good at it they simply take it away from you, you have freedoms here. Go ahead and try to appeal to that 3rd world country’s supreme court. That’d be a joke!

How would you like it if our military refused to take the Pledge and only fought if and when they felt like it and for whatever cause they felt was worthy? With no allegiance to a country, there’s no real reason to fight or uphold its laws.

CBS Sports you are an embarrassment. You have spit in the face of many that came before us to fight and died protecting what the flag and the Pledge represents.5955-Proud-to-be-an-American

This madness is happening all around the country. I can count no less than 5 recent stories on City Councils that refused to say the Pledge because “there wasn’t enough time.” And even more stories on school districts that have decided reciting the Pledge “once in a while” is good enough.

And what the heck is political about the Pledge? Does it only apply to Republicans? Or only Democrats? Maybe just the decline-to-state or Libertarian or Green Party? I know the Communist Socialist Democrat Party of America finds it offensive. Who cares! If you don’t like it, shut up and sit down because that’s the freedom afforded you the Pledge and by those who came before you who fought and died for your right to disagree without being taken out back and being beheaded.

The Pledge should be recited at the beginning of every major event to remind us of the men and women that have come before us, fought and died (yes I am repeating myself on purpose because some of you need it that way). They gave us the freedom to watch a sports game in the stadium or on TV or listen on the radio. They gave us the freedom to put down our government leaders without fear of being killed, to be able to sit down during the Pledge or National Anthem, all without fear of imprisonment. That’s real freedom!

Recently the curator of the 9/11 museum didn’t want to post the picture of the firemen putting the American flag back up on the Twin Tower rubble at the time of the massacre. Shame on him. Most Americans lost their lives that day, American civilians, the buildings on American soil by a group that declared war on America and it’s people and the reason he didn’t want to put it up was that it was too American. In his statement he justified his stance by saying, “I really believe that the way America will look best, the way we can really do best, is to not be Americans so vigilantly and so vehemently.”Proud to be anAmerican song

So hide your flags, your colors, and anything patriotic and according to this well-educated loon, we will all be more American.

If you have to watch CBS Sports, please at let them know of your displeasure with their decision.

Don’t be a do nothing.

America, do not let it slip away.

For what does our Republic stand?

Girl Pledging Allegiance to the Flag

This week we learned 61 percent of Americans believe our president lies anywhere from some to most of the time. That poll was revealed the day before President Obama took to the White House podium for an unannounced press conference asserting that we now have 8 million Americans signed up for Obamacare — whatever that means.

In an interview granted to CBS reporter Major Garrett — one of many interviews CBS always seems to get — President Obama stated there would be “consequences” for any further military action by Russia in the Ukraine. I seem to remember him saying there would be “consequences” for Syrian President Bashar al Assad for using chemical weapons and that he had to go – but then again that “red line” seemed to be bleached out.

Apparently the only real confirmed consequences emanating from the Obama administration are against his declared political enemies — and guys in cowboy hats. They receive the full brunt of the tactics of force, coercion, and intimidation from designated Obama government agencies, be it IRS or BLM.

And speaking of the IRS, seems they blew a deadline this week to have their computer systems upgraded, at a cost of somewhere near $11 million for the American taxpayer. What would happen to us simple working stiffs if we missed the April 15th deadline to pay our tribute to the government?

Mind you, I don’t have a problem with “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s” to a point, but doggone, I’m kinda getting tired of the wasteful spending and the expansion of the welfare nanny-state. I’ve grown disgusted by the use of my taxpayer dollars as largesse by which politicians — especially liberal progressives — bribe the public for their vote. If I hear the president mention “infrastructure repair” one more time, I will need to repair the infrastructure in my home when I destroy my television.

What happened to the “stimulus” and the “shovel-ready jobs” that were supposed to kick start the economy and repair the infrastructure? What is happening with the gas tax monies that the federal government usurps? And again I ask, for what does this Republic stand?

Once upon a time, the word of the leader of the American Republic stood for something, now it is dismissed, disrespected, and disregarded. It’s because we don’t have a leader at this time, just an empty suit speech-giver. And that does not bode well in the face of despots, dictators, autocrats, and theocrats. The dark specter of the 1930s is returning. Then it was Hitler and Chamberlain. Today it is Putin and Obama. Then it was Germany, Italy, and Japan. Today it is Russia, Iran, and China, and its surrogate, North Korea — and the wild card, Islamic terrorists, non-state, non-uniform belligerents.

If we do not restore this Republic to its fundamental principles of the rule of law and individual liberty, we will continue our trek down this road to perdition. If we cannot return to sound fiscal policy to include federal fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense –peace through strength — then the grand experiment begun 237 years ago will fail.

However, I believe — truly believe — in the American resiliency, in our resolve and our indomitable entrepreneurial spirit. As Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Abba Eban said (later attributed to Winston Churchill), “nations do behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.” Let us hope America follows suit.

We’ve tried the whole “fundamental transformation of America” thing and it ain’t working. As a matter of fact, progressive socialism has never worked anywhere in the world.

So let’s get back to our pledge as the Founders intended, — and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation, under God (from a Judeo-Christian heritage) indivisible, with liberty and justice — not government-contrived social egalitarian justice — for all.
