Minnesota school district approves extra pay for non-white teachers

A Minnesota school district will soon exclusively give non-white teachers extra pay to become mentors to other minority teachers.

The Mankato School Board earlier this month voted unanimously to provide “additional stipends” to non-white teachers who become mentors to other non-white colleagues. Additionally, Minnesota-based Alpha News reported that the new policy will also see the district “placing American Indian educators at sites with other American Indian educators and educators of color at sites with other educators of color.”

The school board claims that this new policy will “increase opportunity for collegial support” for teachers who are black, indigenous, and for other people of color. They hope to increase retention rates among these demographics.

“Retention strategies may include providing financial incentives for teachers of color and teachers who are American Indian to work in the school or district for at least five years and placing American Indian educators at sites with other American Indian educators and educators of color at sites with other educators of color to reduce isolation and increase opportunity for collegial support,” the policy reads.

Before the vote on Dec. 7, board members denied that the policy of placing teachers at different work sites based on their race would amount to segregation.

“When you’re one [minority] of a [white] majority it can be very isolating and lonely. To have a support system in place for them is not to segregate them, it is absolutely to support them,” board member Erin Roberts said. “My biggest fear is that we are going to lose talent because of the feeling of being unsupported by those within our district.”

“It’s not about trying to throw the few [BIPOC] individuals we have into one building. It’s about showing them they aren’t alone,” she continued.

“It creates global citizens at the end of the day,” Vice Chairman Kenneth Reid added.

According to Alpha News, the school board based the language of the policy on state law that says “school districts must develop teacher mentoring programs” and that districts may offer “additional stipends as incentives to mentors of color or [those] who are American Indian.”

The outlet observes that while state law requires school districts to develop mentoring programs, they have the option to leave out race-based stipends, yet the board chose to include a racial element in the policy anyway. That racial component is drawing opposition from at least one state lawmaker.

State Rep. Jeremy Munson (R) blasted the policy in a Facebook post, calling the state law it is based on “racist.”

“Our largest local school district just voted to pay people differently, not on merit, or by the content of their character, but based solely on the color of their skin. This is allowed and encouraged under a revision to Minnesota state Statute 122A.70,” Munson wrote.

“I voted against this legislation. I called it racist when we debated it and believe it is wrong, racist, and unconstitutional to pay people more money or less money based solely on the color of their skin,” he said.

This is not the first time the Mankato School Board has caused controversy. In October, Chairwoman Jodi Sapp was criticized for limiting the ability of parents to speak at school board meetings and requiring that they state where they live if they wanted to speak.

WATCH: Occasional-Cortex Is Upset That Her Salary Won’t Be Increased To $178,500 — “It’s Not Even Like A Raise”

When her fellow Congressional Democrats pulled the bill that would give themselves a pay increase, AOC seemed pretty upset. Poor baby!

On Monday, Congressional Democrat leaders canceled the vote on a bill that would have given a salary increase to lawmakers for the first time since 2009. The Congressional Dems faced backlash from both Republicans and Democrats on the proposal which would have increased salaries to lawmakers by $4500. Currently, Members of the House make $174,000 annually, but those with official leadership titles and responsibilities make more.

An increase of $4500 might be a simple “cost of living increase” for AOC, but that would be a whopping 13.8 percent raise for someone earning the median U.S. income of $62,175 according to the June 2018 numbers. Could you imagine waking up to a (nearly) 14 percent raise?

I know I could. Mama needs a new pair of shoes!

Just kidding. I’ve got three kids and two are teenage boys.

Yep, that’s more like it. (Sigh)

Seriously, $4500 a year ain’t nothing to sneeze at, despite her claim that it’s just an increase for the “cost of living.”

Maybe it’s the rent for her luxury apartment that’s straining AOC’s resources. You know, those luxury apartments that she railed against before she got elected? The ones that have the mysterious and terrifying garbage disposals. Yeah, those. She’s responded to the criticism of her new digs by arguing that luxury apartments like the one she lives in should be a “basic right.”

Speaking of responding to criticism, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez took to the Twitters to complain about the nixing of the “cost of living increase.”

She also spoke to members of the Media(D) about her thoughts (such as they are).

AOC called the move “superficial” and said that the pay raise wasn’t a real pay raise because it was a “cost of living adjustment.” She said, “Members of Congress, retail workers, everybody should get a cost of living increases to accommodate for the changes in our economy.”

What changes in the economy could that be, I wonder?

AOC’s concern is the temptation for politicians to turn to “dark money” and lobbying. If the reports are true, she’d know quite a bit about “dark money” operations.

Watch her talk to reporters here:

Isn’t it funny how Socialists (“Democratic” or otherwise) get really antsy when it comes to their money? They’re cool with taking your money, but heaven forbid that you keep them from lining their own pockets. Despite AOC’s claim that she’s fighting for “cost of living increases” for everyone, you know that there are some people that she would exclude.

Like the President.

And his kids.

Would she be fighting for raises for business owners like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg? They work, don’t they? Do they need “cost of living increases,” too?

I’m thinking that those folks would be mysteriously excluded in her noble quest for “cost of living increases” for all.

Incidentally, AOC embraces Modern Monetary Theory which says that countries with their own currency don’t really need to worry about debt because they can just print more money and it’s no biggie. Yeah, that’s working well in Venezuela right now, isn’t it? Printing more money devalues the currency and contributes to hyperinflation.

Frankly, this young lady makes more sense than the real AOC.

Well, she is certainly more adorable!

Don’t get me wrong, though. I want AOC to continue speaking. As long as she does, she makes my job easy.

Santa Obama Gives Pay Raise to Federal Workers

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/12/25/Christmas-Obama-pay-raise

by Ben Shapiro 25 Dec 2013

Just in time for Christmas, President Obama signed an executive order on Monday giving a 1 percent pay raise for federal employees. The raise follows a four year hiatus from salary increases for federal workers, although most federal employees have apparently seen their pay increase via promotion or performance. The first increased paycheck will kick in on January 1.

President Obama’s reward to the federal workforce follows his longstanding belief that government work ought to be a first option for Americans. Nonetheless, Obama’s decision to raise federal pay only widens the income inequality gap between federal workers and private sector employees;

  • as of 2011, the average private sector employee made $59,804 in salary, and $28,000 in benefits,
  • while the average federal workers made $74,436 in salary and $40,000 in benefits.

Furthermore, the gap between Washington, D.C. culture and the rest of the country is growing ever larger.

  • Between 2000 and 2012, according to Census Bureau statistics, Washington, D.C. household income jumped 23.3%; the rest of the country, by contrast, dropped 6.6%.
  • As the Wall Street Journal reported, “The Washington, D.C. metro area — which includes the surrounding suburbs in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia — has it even better, with a median household income of $88,233 that ranks highest among the U.S.’s 25 most populous metro areas.”

But Washington, D.C. remains completely dichotomous, with the percentage of residents living 50% below the poverty line increasing 1% during that period.

President Obama’s Christmas present to his federal friends will amount to nothing more than another lump of coal in the rest of America’s stocking.
