A new poll found that a record percentage of Americans say they are doing worse financially under President Joe Biden’s leadership. 41% of respondents to the ABC News/Washington Post poll said they were financially worse since Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, the highest figure for the question in 37 years that it has been polled. Only 16% of respondents said that they were better off. By contrast, under the Trump administration the poll found that 25% of respondents said they were better off while only 13% said they were worse off.

The poll also found that former President Donald Trump would easily defeat Biden in a hypothetical matchup, with 48% of respondents saying they would vote for Trump and only 44% saying they would vote for Biden. When narrowed to registered voters, the margin only shrunk by one percentage point.

The poll is the latest data point in the debate roiling the Democratic Party whether to have Biden run for another term or to replace him as the party’s candidate for the 2024 election. Many are pointing to his advanced age as a problem that might dissuade many voters from supporting his reelection campaign.

Of respondents who said they were Democrats or independents who lean Democrat, only 44% supported Biden as the party’s nominee in 2023. Nearly half, 49%, said that the party should choose another nominee.

The president angrily lashed out at a reporter in July after he asked him to respond to polling showing many Democrats didn’t want him to run again.

They want me to run,” he exclaimed and yelled at the reporter. “You guys are all the same. That poll showed that 92% of Democrats if I ran would vote for me.

Biden is likely to tout his economic policies during the State of the Union speech on Tuesday. While the unemployment rate remains low, wage growth has been minor and mostly undone by the plague of high inflation.

The poll also found that 53% of Americans disapproved of Biden’s job performance and only 42% approved of his performance.

Are they turning on Biden? Democrats get honest about classified docs scandal: ‘He should have a lot of regrets’

After yet another discovery of classified documents at President Joe Biden’s private Delaware home, Senate Democrats made it clear on Sunday that Biden can no longer excuse his way out of the scandal.

On Saturday, the White House announced another set of classified material improperly in Biden’s possession, again found at Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware, home. The Justice Department had conducted a “consent” search (the White House claimed the administration requested it) and discovered more classified material, even some dating to Biden’s days in the U.S. Senate.

What are Democrats saying?

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the No. 2 Senate Democrat, admitted on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Biden can no longer attack Donald Trump for the Mar-a-Lago classified document snafu.

Let’s be honest about it: When that information is found, it diminishes the stature of any person that’s in possession of them. It’s not supposed to happen,” Durbin said. “Whether it was the fault of a staffer or an attorney, it makes no difference. The elected official bears ultimate responsibility.

Durbin also said:

There’s a standard that we follow when it comes to members of Congress and classified information. The door to my office is closed. The person who presents the document to me takes it out of a locked briefcase, hands it to me and watches as I read it, when I finish reading it, and he takes it back and puts it in the briefcase and leaves the scene. I mean, that’s how carefully we review these documents.

To think that any of them ended up in boxes in storage one place or the other is just unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) was asked on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” how Biden could have improperly retained classified documents from his days as a senator.

I don’t really know the answer to that question because I review classified material as a senator on the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, but when I do it, it’s always in a classified facility where I don’t have access to the materials other than to sit there and read them,” Kaine responded.

He continued, “That’s why there needs to be this independent investigation and independent prosecutor. How many documents are we talking about? Dozens? A handful or hundreds? How serious are they? Why were they taken? Did anyone have access to them? And then, is the president being cooperative?

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said that Biden should have “a lot of regrets.” Manchin was responding to Biden’s declaration last week that he has no regrets for retaining the classified documents.

I think he should have a lot of regrets,” Manchin said.

I say, whoever’s responsible — I mean, if I hold people accountable, whether it be my chief of staff or, you know, my staff that were doing this and I’m looking at — then I’m going to hold someone accountable, but basically, the buck stops with me,” he added.

Anything else?

new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that a majority of American adults — including registered Democrats — support an investigation into Biden’s improper retention of classified documents.

Percentage of Americans saying the country is headed in the wrong direction spikes to 85%

An astounding 85% of Americans said that the country was headed in the wrong direction in a recent survey. The AP-NORC survey found that only 14% of Americans said that the country was headed in the right direction, a dire result for Democrats hoping to hold on to congressional power in the midterm elections.

The percentage of Americans optimistic about the country’s direction has steadily collapsed from 29% in April to 21% in May and to 14% in June. In the newest survey 92% of Republicans and 78% of Democrats said the country was headed in the wrong direction.

Americans had a worsening negative view of President Joe Biden in the survey. Only 38% said they approved of the job Biden is doing, while 57% said they disapproved of the job he’s doing. Even worse for the president, only 28% of Americans said they approved of Biden on the economy, the lowest rating Biden has received in the survey. When asked about gun policy, only 36% said they approved of Biden’s performance.

While some progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have blamed Biden’s low polling on his lack of attention for his left-wing socialist base, centrists in the part have blamed progressives for pushing unpopular policies like “defund the police” and transgender activism.

One analysis by Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research predicted that economic concerns would cost Democrats control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections.

“The most recent readings of most economic indicators we examine suggest that Democrats will lose the majority after this year’s elections,” the group wrote. “While falling real disposable income suggests a large loss, most other indicators suggest… a loss of 15 to 25 seats.”
