Former Rep. Allen West says President Barack Obama shouldn’t have thrown the intelligence community under the bus over the failure to see the Islamic State (ISIS) threat sooner.
“In the military we have a simple maxim: Leaders take responsibility. They don’t take credit,” West said Monday on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”
But West, a retired Army officer, said that Obama’s own failure to read his daily intelligence briefings constituted a “dereliction of duty,” and he should accept blame.
“Is his head in the game?” West asked.
The White House is playing politics as it now attempts to fight ISIS with airstrikes and is not paying attention to “practicality on the ground,” he said.
Part of the problem, West said, is a failure to even recognize who ISIS is. He pointed to Obama’s statement in his Sept. 10 address to the nation that despite its name, ISIS is not a part of Islam.
“Are they Mennonites? Are they Amish?” West said. “We don’t even recognize their ideology.”
