Ford CEO says company will ‘think carefully’ about where it builds vehicles after UAW strike

Ford’s top boss, CEO Jim Farley, said Thursday that the company will “think carefully” about where it builds future vehicles following the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike. The strike came with a heavy price for the Detroit automaker. For one, the company’s Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville was the first to shut down when thousands of UAW union members walked off the job. It was a major play in the UAW’s strike last fall against Detroit’s Big Three automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.

THE UAW STRIKE MIGHT BE OVER, BUT WILL CONSUMERS FEEL IT LATER?

During the Wolfe Research Global Auto Conference in New York, Farley said the strike had been “an extremely difficult moment” for the company, noting Ford had “prided itself on not having a strike since ’70.”

He continued by saying that Ford, unlike its competitors, has 57,000 UAW workers and that 100% of its trucks are made by such workers in the U.S.

“Our competitors do not do that. They went through bankruptcy, and they moved production to Mexico and other places. So it has always been a cost for us. And we always thought it was the right kind of cost,” he said.

UAW HITS GM AGAIN, STRIKING AT AUTOMAKER’S LARGEST PLANT

The moment Ford’s plant shut down was a “watershed moment.”

“Really, our relationship has changed,” Farley told the conference. “Does this have business impact? Yes.”

In a statement to The Associated Press, UAW President Shawn Fain argued that Ford should “find a CEO who’s interested in the future of this country’s auto industry.”

“Maybe Ford doesn’t need to move factories to find the cheapest labor on Earth,” he said. “Maybe it needs to recommit to American workers.”

It was the first time a president appeared alongside striking workers in modern history.

The work stoppage cost the industry billions of dollars, and the Big Three all ratified record contracts with the union in order to get production lines running again.

Ford Motor Co. is canceling plans to build a new manufacturing plant in Mexico and instead is investing $700 million in Michigan, the automaker announced on Tuesday.

The company’s CEO, Mark Fields, told CNN that the move is a “vote of confidence” in President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to create a pro-business environment. Fields emphasized, however, that he did not negotiate any special deal with Trump. “We didn’t cut a deal with Trump,” he said. “We did it for our business.”

Trump bashed Ford on the campaign trail over the automaker’s plan to invest $1.6 billion in Mexico by shifting its North American small-car production south of the border. Ford had emphasized that the move would not affect U.S. jobs because the automaker would be putting new vehicles into the Michigan plants.

But now Ford will instead build the Ford Focus at an existing plant in Mexico. It will also invest $700 million in its plant in Flat Rock, Mich. and create 700 jobs in an effort to produce more electric and self-driving cars. The automaker has said it plans to build a fully self-driving car by 2021.

“I am thrilled that we have been able to secure additional UAW-Ford jobs for American workers,” said Jimmy Settles, United Auto Workers vice president, according to CNN.A Ford spokeswoman told The Hill that Trump’s team was notified of their plans Tuesday morning.

Ford is not the only automaker to draw Trump’s ire. Earlier Tuesday, the president-elect blasted General Motors on Twitter, threatening a “big border tax” on GM models made in Mexico.

GM announced last June it would build the Chevrolet Cruze model in Mexico and sell them in the U.S. for the first time due to high demand. The automaker revealed the change after its plant in Lordstown, Ohio, struggled to meet consumer demands.

In a statement released about an hour after Trump tweeted, GM said only a small number of its cars made in Mexico are sent to the U.S. market.

U.S. taxpayers lost $11.3 billion in the federal bailout of GM following the 2009 financial crisis. Ford did not take a bailout.

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must Investigate Planned Parenthood for Selling Aborted Baby Parts

Now, another company and a large nonprofit group are joining the list — saying they last donated to Planned Parenthood many years ago and no longerPP Monster do so: American Express and the American Cancer Society.

Officials with both companies contacted the Daily Signal and told the publication about the cessation of donations to Planned Parenthood:

American Express: “American Express last contributed to two Planned Parenthood community projects more than fifteen years ago. One project provided services to teens such as computer workshops, job preparation, mentoring, recreation and counseling. The other supported adult volunteers working with at-risk adolescents in a local school district.”

The American Cancer Society: “The American Cancer Society does not fund grants to Planned Parenthood affiliates. We have previously funded a very limited number of cancer control grants to Planned Parenthood affiliates to implement cancer control programs, such as training clinic staff to screen patients for smoking, providing patients the benefits of quitting smoking, and referring patients to a toll-free smoking cessation helpline. These grants expired several years ago. The American Cancer Society does not fund—nor has it ever funded—abortion or contraceptive counseling.”

This latest development comes in the wake of two undercover videos that showed Planned Parenthood executives talking about the sale of fetal body parts. Planned Parenthood is facing both federal and state investigationsand the possibility of losing taxpayer funding.how many body parts

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must De-Fund Planned Parenthood Immediately

Here’s what the other companies had to say:

* A representative from Coca-Cola confirmed for The Daily Signal the company does not contribute to Planned Parenthood, nor does it match employee contributions to the organization.

* “We are making sure that Ford Motor Company is not listed as a Planned Parenthood contributor on their website,” a representative from Ford told The Daily Signal. “In addition, we do not offer an employee match for charitable contributions,” the Ford representative said. It has been at least 10 years since Ford stopped matching employee gift contributions, the representative added.

* Similarly, Xerox was listed on the Planned Parenthood website and has said it also does not donate in any way. “We checked our files for the last 20 years and have no record of Xerox Corp. contributing to Planned Parenthood,” a representative from Xerox told The Daily Signal.

By Wednesday afternoon, Planned Parenthood had removed Xerox from its list of companies that match gifts to the organization. By Thursday morning, Planned Parenthood removed every company name listed as a donor.
