Dr. James Dobson’s Election Reflections

Commentary written several days after the November 3rd election:

Dear Friends,

There is a heaviness within my spirit today on behalf of our beloved nation. I’m sure I share that sentiment with many of you. In a sense, Shirley and I are also grieving over the potential passing of an era, during which I believe God gave America a spiritual reprieve. President Donald Trump was partially responsible for this crucial change of trajectory.

He isn’t a perfect man, and his relationship with the Lord is a very private matter. But he attempted during the first four years of his presidency to get acquainted with, to honor, and to learn from Christian leaders. He is very close to Rev. Franklin Graham, Dr. Robert Jeffress, Rev. Paula White, Dr. Jack Graham, former Governor Mike Huckabee, and at least 30 others, including myself. He once said while greeting us at a formal dinner, “This is your house. Welcome to it.” He then led us on a tour upstairs in the private residence.

Donald Trump is the first president to celebrate the National Day of Prayer (NDP) in the Rose Garden, which he did all four years of his presidency. President George W. Bush also took the NDP very seriously and held formal services in the East Room of the White House during his eight years in office. Shirley served as chairperson of NDP, and spoke at each event. Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush also celebrated the National Day of Prayer during their terms in office. Neither Bill Clinton nor Barack Obama held NDP ceremonies at the White House. 

Back to Donald Trump, he is the most pro-life president in American history. He is the only Chief Executive to have spoken at the March for Life, which is an annual remembrance of the millions of babies aborted since Roe v. Wade in 1973. One of Trump’s most significant decisions has been the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to be an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. She never wavered on her pro-life beliefs even during her contentious confirmation hearings.

People who know the President best tell us he is one of the most hard-working and dedicated men ever to serve in the Oval Office. We saw that indefatigable nature during his final campaign, when he once held nine rallies in two days. He is also remarkably resilient. The media and his political opponents hammered him every day for four years. There was never a respite. President Trump arose every morning knowing he would be unfairly ridiculed and attacked from morning to night. This criticism began before he was elected and continued throughout his presidency. Nevertheless, he stood like a rock and his list of accomplishments could fill a book. 
Yes, I admire Donald Trump. He is sometimes brash and aggressive. But as a New York entrepreneur and as a president under siege, he has had to be tough to deal with his challenges. But there is no doubt that he loves America and its people. Speaking personally, I will miss his presence on the national stage when he is no longer our President.

But by the way, we’re told that 81 percent of evangelicals voted for Donald Trump this year, while only 14 percent voted for the Biden ticket. I think I know why. 

I won’t speculate on the voting controversy. If, however, American citizens have handed over the reins of power to the Biden/Harris ticket, it is important that we examine the platform on which they ran. Elections have consequences, as we know. The promises made in writing and on the campaign trail should disturb every conservative Christian. Let’s look first at the sanctity of human life. 

Mr. Biden has told us emphatically that he will bring an open season on the unborn child. This is what LifeNews wrote about him.

– he will force Americans to fund abortions during his first week in office

– he will implement abortion on demand nationwide without any limits

– he will force Americans to fund Planned Parenthood, the biggest abortion provider1

– he will force Christians such as the Little Sisters of the Poor to fund abortions in [their] health insurance plans2

– and he will stack the courts with pro-abortion judges who would keep abortions legal for decades to come3

That should break the heart of every lover of God’s children. We, as American citizens, will be complicit in the deaths of millions. How can Joe Biden say he wants to be president of ALL the American people? What does he have to say to the half of us who vigorously oppose abortion on demand, paid for by taxpayers through nine months of pregnancy and perhaps beyond, in America and, by inference, in nations around the world? If Donald Trump has been the pro-life President, Joe Biden will be the radical abortion president from his inauguration forward. If Biden does become president, I will do what I can to oppose his pro-death policies every day he is in office.

Biden’s regime will also usher in other forms of moral depravity. For example, he recently suggested that kids as young as eight or ten years old should be able to undergo irreversible transsexual transformation. That’s what the man said! Kamala Harris, who may be our next vice president, said she wants this country to legalize all prostitution.4 What other moral outrage will come from this godless administration? Heaven only knows! 
Joe Biden and the Democrats also support open borders. So much for the wall! That means that people around the world will be invited to enter this country legally and take up permanent residence within it. From the day of their arrival, they will be entitled to free welfare, free legal services, free medical care, free education, and who knows what else. Millions of people must be out there thinking, “How can I get to that promised land?”

We have also been told to expect trillions of dollars to be spent for the foolishness of the Green New Deal, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the helm. That could bankrupt the nation. And can you imagine how Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will deal with hostile governments, including those in China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea? That is an international nightmare in the making.

The institution of the family will find no friends in the White House or in the halls of Congress. Taxes are likely to skyrocket for middle-class parents and others. We can also expect unprecedented assaults on religious liberty and churches could be stripped of Constitutional protection. Also at risk are our Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment, and other provisions within the U.S. Constitution. Democrats are talking about defunding the police and even the military. Radical change is about to descend on the nation. America is about to be over-run by the most leftist regime in history.

If that sounds discouraging and hopeless, we have to remember Who is in charge here. I believe the Almighty has had His hand of protection on this land since the days of its founding fathers. Our ancestors cried out to Him at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Midway, and Normandy. I don’t believe He has forsaken us now. So how do we explain the predicament that confronts us? I don’t know. Millions of people have been praying about the outcome of this election because we knew it would have such profound moral and spiritual implications. But who can discern the mind of God? 

I grappled with such matters in my book, When God Doesn’t Make Sense. I wrote one morning after pacing back and forth in my study, “We must never forget that He is God. He is majestic and holy and sovereign. He is accountable to no one. He is not an errand boy who chases the assignments we dole out. He is not a genie who pops out of the bottle to satisfy our whims. He is not our servant—we are His. And our reason for existence is to glorify and honor Him . . . even when nothing makes sense. I then heard Him say, ‘Trust Me.'”

And trust we shall. Still, we ask, “Why did this election come tantalizingly close to a victory for life and morality, only to end tragically?” Could it be because America has abandoned its moral convictions? I wrote in my general letter several months ago that our popular culture has become utterly wicked. If that is accurate, how could a nation murder 62 million babies, fresh from the hand of the Creator, without expecting judgment to fall upon them? Clearly, we stand guilty before Him.

If this explains the disaster that has now befallen this great nation, there is only one biblical response. It is repentance. It is for us to kneel humbly before our righteous and all-seeing God and beg for forgiveness, both corporately and individually. That alone will save us.

We may have lost this election battle when it comes to the policies that matter most to us. Yet, the culture war rages on, and the gospel message of Jesus Christ is our banner and greatest hope. This is why we do what we do at the Dobson Family Institute. Faith and family remain the mission, and our conviction has never been more ardent. We are ambassadors for Christ, and we still have work to do. Are you with us?

Let us pray: 

Lord, this is my prayer for my nation. Forgive us for our profound sinfulness, our arrogance, our pride, and our hands that have shed innocent blood. Restore our marriages and our churches. Bring a spirit of renewal and revival across this land. And Lord, in Thy wrath, remember mercy.

Amen and Amen.

Dobson warns of socialist takeover if Christians don’t vote

Dr. James DobsonDr. James Dobson warned Christians that if they neglect their duty to vote in November’s midterm elections, they will likely lose their freedom – giving way to a socialist takeover sweeping America.

“Socialism would replace freedom and free enterprise,” Dobson alerted readers of his October monthly newsletter, according to WND. “God help us if you and I fail to fulfill our moral responsibility.”

Vote, or else …

The founder of Family Talk radio and the James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) made it clear that there will be dire consequences if Christians sit out November’s election – stressing that it carries much more weight than any other midterm in United States history.

“Everything is on the line, and a wholly new interpretation of the Constitution looms before us,” insisted Dobson, who also founded Focus on the Family decades ago.

Having advised five presidents and received his Ph.D. in Child Development from the University of Southern California (USC) – where he served as an associate clinical professor of pediatrics for 14 years – Dobson’s counsel has been held in high esteem throughout America for many decades, and his latest piece of advice focuses on one topic that he said “rises to the top” over all others.

“Powerful social movements and passions are ‘blowing in the wind,’ and most of them have dangerous implications for the institution of the family, religious liberty, our children and unborn babies – and the country at large,” the evangelical leader wrote his constituents.

Dobson impressed that America’s direction over the next few decades will be determined by the results of November’s midterm election.

“Christians must go to the polls next month and let their voices be heard!” the pro-family activist exclaimed.

The host of the Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk radio program – speaking with the authority of his 17 honorary degrees, 17 years’ experience on the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ attending staff, and as a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame – asked his supporters if they will take action steps in order to continue living out their faith in America.

“What will you do about it?” Dobson questioned his readers. “Will you sit out this election? God help us if you and I fail to fulfill our moral responsibility … Everything is on the line.”

Dobson then referred to an election win 150 years ago by one of the most devout Christian presidents in U.S. history.

“Dobson notes Abraham Lincoln’s presidential election victory for a second term, which has been described as the most important presidential election ever,” WND reported. “The outcomes of many races likely will hinge who decides to vote, he argues.”

The author of dozens of books – such as The New Dare to Discipline, Love for a Lifetime, Life on the Edge, Love Must Be Tough, The New Strong-Willed Child, Bringing up Boys and Bringing Up Girls – explained why this election is probably the most significant midterm since America’s founding.

“Destiny rides before us again,” Dobson warned. “As Barack Obama said after winning a second presidential term, ‘Elections have consequences.’ Indeed, they do. We – the voters – have it within our power to protect our Constitution, preserve our democratic system of government, and secure the blessings of liberty for us and our posterity.”

He implored Christians to do their duty by taking “30 minutes to go to the polls on November 6” after studying out the issues and candidates on the ballot, while urging them to get those around them involved in political process at their local polling precincts.

“Call or email every friend in your church or neighborhood and urge them to vote!”Dobson exclaimed. “Drive them to the polling place in your car if they don’t have transportation or don’t know where it is located. Ask your pastor to set up registration tables in the vestibule of your church. Talk to your family members. Do everything you can to influence this election. You can be sure that those whose views you oppose will be working just as hard. If you are AWOL in this battle, you and everything you stand for might slip away.”

Warning from the past

The evangelical leader went on to point out that America is “plagued by hatred” before referring back to Lincoln and begging for mercy for Christians suffering the consequences of the midterm results.

“In that tragic environment, I will point you to the words of Abraham Lincoln – spoken on the occasion of his second Inaugural address, March 2, 1864,” Dobson continued. “The war had 13 months to go, and the North would eventually achieve victory. Lincoln had said years earlier that, ‘This government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free.’ It would take a terrible Civil War to resolve that conflict. During that struggle, 600,000 of his countrymen would die, both from the North and South.”

He then cited Lincoln’s call for compassion that he would like to be relayed onto Americans today.

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations,” Dobson quoted the 16th president.

The Christian based in Colorado ended with a call to believers.

“Dobson adds [that Christians must] spread the word [and] get the message to columnists, websites, pastors, newspapers, magazines and more,” WND’s Bob Unruh noted.

There is no time to lose,” Dobson warned.

Protect your faith and family

Last month, Dobson sent out a similar warning in anticipation of the approaching midterms.

“Everything that matters – everything of value – sits on the foundation of the family,” Dobson told The Todd Starnes Show in August. “The institution of marriage and parenthood underlies everything that is good about what we believe in, yet since the ‘70s – and certainly up to now – there is this effort to redefine marriage and to undermine what it means to raise children.”

Point blank, he warned that socialism will swarm and destroy America.

“[The attack] came from liberal ideology [and although it can be traced as far back as the ‘70s and ‘80s, the left-wing movement has] reached a fever pitch that has brought hatred for everything that made this country great,” Dobson added. “I am deeply concerned about it.”

He then gave an example of how socialist principles in America’s bureaucracy are getting out of hand.

“In a real example of undermining ‘what it means to raise children,’ Dobson related how children in a California school district – aged seven to 10 – were subjected to a questionnaire that asked them numerous questions about their sexuality, including if they ever ‘think about touching someone else’s private parts,’”’s Jeremiah Poff noted. “Dobson said that the parents of the children sued in both federal and district court, but lost the initial ruling – as well as an appeal to the Ninth Circuit.”

Dobson was not sure if God-given parental rights ultimately lost or prevailed in this situation, but regardless of the outcome, he says that such instances should serve as a dire warning to parents in America of any background.

“I don’t know what has happened since then, and I hope that’s going to go to the Supreme Court if it hasn’t already,” the Christian doctor expressed to Fox Radio’s Starnes on his show. “But it illustrates the fact that the school districts want to gain control.”

Circling back to the upcoming election, Dobson revealed the shocking figure that less than 50 percent of Christians turn up at the ballot box to vote in elections.

“Many of us agree completely with what you and I are talking about, but they’re too lazy – or they think politics is dirty, or who knows what their motivation is,” Dobson lamented to Starnes.

The pro-family and pro-life leader also shared that he was shocked about how a growing number of Americans view socialism in a positive light.

“[Socialism’s economic model has] never worked anywhere in history, [and is a] disaster,” Dobson concluded. “You can’t have a socialistic country and have a respect for the Constitution and the rule of law because we’re given rights in there that socialistic leaders will undermine. If you take out the Constitution, there’s not a whole lot left. That takes my breath away that there are people out there that are really serious about making this a socialistic country.”

Echoing a past warning

Earlier in the summer, Dobson also warned about the dire consequences of elections.

The results of Christians not getting to the polls in the 2012 election led former President Barack Obama to his second term, when he demanded that Christian ministries pay for employees’ abortions, which spurred Dobson to defy the president by saying, “Come and get me – I will not yield to your wicked regulations.”

In his August newsletter, Dobson blasted Americans’ negligence to vote.

“More than half of Americans – including the majority of Christians – don’t even bother to vote,” Dobson wrote, according to a July WND report posted on “Shame on them all! Don’t they know that tyranny for us and our children is only one generation – or even one election – away?”

He passionately called Christians to vote and set up biblically minded leaders who will allow their families to live according to their faith in God.

“We must vote, vote, vote to elect leaders who will defend what has been purchased with the blood of patriots who died to protect our liberty,” the faith leader continued. “We owe it to the memory of their sacrifice to preserve what they did for us. We must not fritter it away on our watch!”

Dobson went on to cite the famous “fundamental change” slogan that was touted by Obama – using it as a dire warning to Christians.

“If any politician tells you he will ‘fundamentally change’ this nation, what he means is that he plans to undermine our Constitution and take away our heritage of freedom,” Dobson explained. “Run from him or her!”

This alert was dispatched this summer over fears of the Democratic Party’s threat to gain control on Capitol Hill and over its ongoing efforts to impeach the commander-in-chief – threats that have not abated to this date with just over a month left until November’s midterms.

“The exhortation comes as Democrats seek to recapture the majority in the U.S. House – where they already have laid plans to impeach President Trump,” WND reported at the time.

wedding_ringsDr. James Dobson, who founded the highly influential groups Focus on the Family and Family Research Council and now runs Family Talk Radio, is warning that if the U.S. Supreme Court redefines marriage as analysts predict, the ruling will presage the “fall of Western civilization.”

“I do not recall a time when the institutions of marriage and the family have faced such peril, or when the forces arrayed against them were more formidable or determined,” he writes in a letter distributed to his hundreds of thousands of supporters.

Barring a miracle, the family that has existed since antiquity will likely crumble, presaging the fall of Western civilization itself. This is a time for concerted prayer, divine wisdom and greater courage than we have ever been called upon to exercise,” he writes.

The author of staples to families around the world such as “Bringing Up Girls,” “Bringing Up Boys” and “When God Doesn’t Make Sense,” frequently has tangled with the Obama administration.

At one point he described President Obama as the “abortion president” and warned America is heading toward “depravity.” He also, amid his lawsuit against the administration over Obamacare’s abortion requirements, told the president he would refuse to obey any law that required him to participate in the killing of an unborn child.

“I believe in the rule of law, and it has been my practice since I was in college to respect and honor those in authority over us. It is my desire to do so now. However, this assault on the sanctity of human life takes me where I cannot go,” he wrote in an open letter to the president.

“I WILL NOT pay the surcharge for abortion services. The amount of the surcharge is irrelevant,” he said. “To pay one cent for the killing of babies is egregious to me, and I will do all I can to correct a government that lies to me about its intentions and then tries to coerce my acquiescence with extortion. It would be a violation of my most deeply held convictions to disobey what I consider to be the principles in Scripture. The Creator will not hold us guiltless if we turn a deaf ear to the cries of His innocent babies. So come and get me if you must, Mr. President. I will not bow before your wicked regulation.”

WND also reported that when Dobson spoke to the National Day of Prayer in Washington, hundreds stood and cheered his condemnation of the abortion-funding plan, now defeated multiple times in U.S. courts.

‘Hurtling’ toward Gomorrah

His newest comments were written for distribution to constituents of the organization he founded after leaving Focus on the Family in 2010, Family Talk, which features the daily radio show “Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson.”

“We … are not simply ‘slouching toward Gomorrah,’ as Judge Robert Bork warned in his best-selling book; we are hurtling toward it,” he writes. “The old earthen dam that has held and protected the reservoir of Judeo-Christian values since the days of our Founding Fathers has given way.”

If the Supreme Court redefines marriage, he says, “an avalanche of court cases will be filed on related issues that can’t even be imagined today.”

Religious liberty “will be assaulted from every side.”

“You can be certain that conservative churches will be dragged into court by the hundreds,” Dobson writes. “Their leaders will be required to hire people who don’t share the beliefs of their denominations and constituents. Pastors may have to officiate at same-sex marriages, and they could be prohibited from preaching certain passage of Scripture. … Prison is also a possibility.”Picture1

WND has compiled a “Big List of Christian Coercion” with dozens of cases in which Christians have been fined, threatened or penalized for recognizing the biblical definition of marriage. Many organizations and companies endorsing traditional and biblical marriages will simply be shut down.

Forcing doctrinal change

“Consider an editorial published in the New York Times a few weeks ago,” Dobson writes. “It was written by liberal columnist, Frank Bruni, who insisted that Christians must be ‘made’ to change their church doctrines on sexual morality. He actually wrote, ‘Church leaders must be made to take homosexuality off their sin list.’”Free Speech Definition

Already law in a couple of states, Obama’s plan would require counselors to accept homosexuality in all such cases.

“What business does this man have telling parents how to help their confused and disoriented kids even after they have been abused and exploited sexually? This is outrageous!” Dobson says.AMEN

All of which, he writes, defies the facts of marriage.


“The institution of the family is one of the Creator’s most marvelous and enduring gifts to humankind. It was revealed to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and then described succinctly in Genesis 2:24, where we read, ‘For this cause, a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.’ With those 20 words, God announced the ordination of male-female marriage, long before He established the two other great human institutions, the church and the government,” he writes.

Every civilization has held to that understanding of marriage until now.

“God help us if we throw the divine plan for humankind on the ash heap of history,” he said. “Down one path are millions of strong and vibrant families with their children growing up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Down the other path is a nation drifting away from its spiritual roots in a culture that will teach a dangerous ideology to today’s younger generation and those yet to come.

“Prayer is our only hope, but it is a powerful one. Even at this late hour, the Lord could still respond to the petitions of millions of godly people. Shirley and I are among those who are praying for a miracle. Will you join us?”

George Washington’s warning

WND reported just days ago when Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, author of the New York Times bestseller “The Harbinger” and the inspiration behind the “Isaiah 9:10 Judgment” movie, smacked down the Supreme Court’s assumption that it even has the authority to redefine marriage.

“The justices of the Supreme Court took up their seats [in a hearing] on whether they should strike down the biblical and historic definition of marriage,” he said. “That the event should even take place is a sign this is America of [George] Washington’s warning … a nation at war against its own foundation.”Picture2

Washington warned that the smiles of heaven can never be expected on a nation “that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which heaven itself hath ordained,” he said.

Cahn noted the Supreme Court opens sessions with the words, “God save the United States and this honorable court.”

“If this court should overrule the word of God and strike down the eternal rules of order and right that heaven itself ordained, how then will God save it?” he asked. “Justices, can you judge the ways of God? There is another court and there another judge, where all men and all judges will give account.

“If a nation’s high court should pass judgment on the Almighty, should you then be surprised God will pass judgment on the court and that nation? We are doing that which Israel did on the altars of Baal,” he said.

Picture5In preparation for the court’s eventual ruling, thousands of Christians, including hundreds of leaders from organizations representing millions, have said civil disobedience is an option should the court’s opinion kill marriage. The Marriage Pledge says: “We will view any decision by the Supreme Court [overturning traditional marriage] or any court the same way history views the Dred Scott and Buck v. Bell decisions. Our highest respect for the rule of law requires that we not respect an unjust law that directly conflicts with higher law.”  The petition was assembled by Keith Fournier, a Catholic deacon who is editor of Catholic Online, and Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel.

“A decision purporting to redefine marriage flies in the face of the Constitution and is contrary to the natural created order. As people of faith we pledge obedience to our Creator when the state directly conflicts with higher law.

“We respectfully warn the Supreme Court not to cross this line.”

In Dred Scott, the Supreme Court said blacks are less than human, and in Buck, it ordered the government sterilization of innocent people.

The board of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Counsel, which represents 40,118 evangelical Hispanic churches in America and about 500,000 in Latin America and Spain, on Tuesday voted to sign the Marriage Pledge, warning that a decision mandating same-sex marriage simply would not be accepted. issued a statement: “Remember, no matter how the court decides this summer, the truth about marriage will never change.”

Pledge co-author Mat Staver wrote at “I argued that a bad court decision might require civil disobedience. I still pray that won’t be necessary. I pray the Supreme Court will allow states to recognize natural marriage. That would be a great victory for truth, but it would not end the fight. Neither the Supreme Court nor any state has the authority to redefine the natural created order of marriage. Marriage is no more a state’s rights issue than is slavery or the law of gravity.
