President Obama took the occasion of the Easter Prayer Breakfast today to criticize Christians. Appearing to veer off script, he said slowly, “On Easter, I do reflect on the fact, that as a Christian, I am supposed to love.” Obama continued: “And I have to say that sometimes, when I listen to less-than-loving expressions by Christians, I get concerned.”
The audience loudly groaned, and Obama pulled back.
“But that’s a topic for another day,” he said, to laughter and applause from the audience. “I was about to veer off,” he smiled. “I’m pulling it back.” The crowd laughed and clapped. Returning to the prepared remarks, which seem incredibly derivative of Edward Kennedy’s eulogy for his assassinated brother Robert, Obama said: “Where there is injustice, we defend the oppressed …”
The crowd hadn’t yet quieted down, and someone in the crowd yelled “Peace!”
“Where there’s disagreement…” Obama began, before bursting into laughter.
