Successful men and women attract a following. Have you noticed? It seems we believe that success breeds success, and if we associate with successful people, we too might become successful. The truth is, very often people do become like the object of their focus. We are to worship God because He alone is worthy of our worship. Over and over again in the book of Revelation we see the phrase “Worthy art Thou.” And He is. But His worthiness is not the sole reason we worship God the Father.
We also desire to become like the One we adore. Henry Scougal, the English Puritan, writes, “The worth or excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love.” Think about that! If we love lowly things, our soul will be lowly. But if we love glorious things, worthy things, our soul is exalted, or carried higher. God is the most glorious Being of all, and if we adore Him, our souls will become excellent. Worshipping God helps us to become like Him. “Oh, come, let us adore Him!”
