Trump picks Mattis for Defense secretary: report / © Getty Images

Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis is President-elect Donald Trump‘s pick to run the Pentagon, The Washington Post reported Thursday afternoon.

To become Defense secretary, Mattis would need Congress to change a law disallowing anyone who has been on active duty in the last seven years from taking the position.

James Norman Mattis is a retired United States Marine Corps general who last served as the 11th commander of United States Central Command from August 11, 2010 to March 22, 2013.

Timeline

1972: He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Central Washington University and was commissioned a second lieutenant through ROTC on January 1, 1972.
2004: Mattis played key roles in combat operations in Fallujah, including negotiation with the insurgent command inside of the city during Operation Vigilant Resolve in April 2004, as well as participation in planning of the subsequent Operation Phantom Fury in November.
2007: On September 11, 2007, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced that President George W. Bush had nominated Mattis for appointment to the rank of general to command U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.
2007: Mattis was promoted to four-star general and took control of JFCOM/SACT on November 9, 2007.
2008: Mattis is portrayed by Robert John Burke in the 2008 HBO mini-series Generation Kill.
2009: He transferred the job of SACT to French General Stéphane Abrial on September 9, 2009, but continued in command of JFCOM.
