“Tendencies, which had found no political room to unfold themselves in other lands, wrought here without restraint…. Every theological
vagabond and peddler may drive here his bungling trade, without passport or license, and sell his false ware at pleasure. What is to come of such confusion is not now to be seen.” Philip Schaff, The Principle of Protestantism, 1844
The Founders’ Christian worldview dominated early American education and society. They battled where competition was fiercest — education, City Hall, business and politics — laying the foundation of America on the bedrock of Jesus Christ. Righteousness exalts a nation, and individuals alike.
The Founders rejected the Greek model of education, which focused on the mind, content and intellect. They adopted the Hebrew model of education emphasizing character, righteousness and virtue, that which distinguishes a nation and its citizens. The Founders accepted that without a moral component, education is of little value to those with “shoddy moral character, prone to wickedness and simple nastiness, and devoid of good sense and moral compunctions.”
Christians established America — not secularists – embedding religious and political thought in its underpinning, predestining
America for moral and political greatness;
“We do hereby Dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains.”
By wisdom found only in God and His Word, a biblically literate people established and produced an exceptional America. Knowing the Bible was merely the beginning of elementary education. The Bible was the key to long-term sustainable freedom as the
fixed point by which to judge and order society.
“There never has been a period of history, in which the Common Law did not recognize Christianity as lying at its foundation.” U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, 1829.
One that can command his temper and rule his spirit is superior to him that storms a fortified city;
- “A wise man went up against the city of warriors and brought down its strong fortifications.”
- In God’s unchanging order wisdom is better than strength, and better than weapons.
Until America restores the authority of the Bible in public education and the Town
Square, our freedom hangs in the balance.
Righteousness not only brings strength, but boldness;
“A wicked person flees when no one is chasing him, but righteous people are as bold as lions.”
Horace Greeley observed in the mid 19th Century — editor of “the most influential newspaper in the country”;
“It is impossible to mentally or socially enslave a Bible reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom.”
How do we get out of this mess?
My guess is that God in His omniscience has in training His men and His women “for such a time as this”, because, in reality, only Jesus brings transformation. Government is the problem, not the solution.
Those God intends to use at critical periods in history are often, “…located in queer and unexpected places. Joseph in prison, the descendants of Abraham laboring in the brick-kilns of Egypt, Daniel in the lions’ den, Jonah in the great fish’s belly, Paul clinging to a spar in the sea.”
Joseph sold into slavery by his brothers illustrates this principle: “
Now, it was not a coincidence that Joseph ended up in this man’s home. Unbeknownst to Joseph, the Lord had sent him to Potiphar’s house to prepare him for the important task which lay ahead, that of serving as the second highest official in the land of Egypt. But in order for this to happen, Joseph first had to learn the language, culture, business, and politics of Egypt.”
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? and why are you disturbed within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” Psalm 42:5
