Coulter: Maybe Republicans should try being popular

Republicans don’t control the U.S. Senate and they don’t have the presidency. Instead of wasting time and energy in doomed efforts to defeat President Obama’s Cabinet nominees or sucking up to illegal aliens, why not focus on issues where Republicans can be off-the-charts popular while forcing Democrats into taking stupid positions?

After the slaughters at Virginia Tech, Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., and Newtown, Conn., every sentient person knows we need to do something about institutionalizing the mentally ill and — at the very least — keeping guns out of their hands.

That happens to be impossible right now. Involuntary commitments even for the severely psychotic went the way of vagrancy laws. Although federal law technically requires background checks to include records of mental illness, the states and mental health industry refuse to provide that information.

Of course, the vast majority of mentally disturbed individuals are not dangerous. But looking at it from the other end, more than half of all mass murder is committed by the mentally ill. Gun ownership doesn’t lead to random murder rampages; mental illness does.

And the good news for Republicans is: Democrats will only pretend to support keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous psychotics, while working frantically to gut and undermine such measures. Liberals fear “stigmatizing” the mentally ill more than they fear another mass murder.

Instead of proposing serious reforms, the Democrats play politics by demonizing responsible gun owners and the Republicans who defend them.

The Democrats’ gun proposals are like the joke about the drunk looking for his keys under the lamplight:

“Is that where you dropped them?”

“No, but the light’s better here.”

Preventing crazy people from buying guns is hard. The ACLU will sue and we’ll be tied up in lawsuits for a decade, at which point a Democrat-appointed judge will rule that including records of paranoid delusions in FBI background checks is unconstitutional.

As former federal judge H. Lee Sarokin (a Clinton appointee) might say, “We should revoke their condition, not their gun permits.”

The light’s better over by the sane, responsible gun owners, who wouldn’t hurt a fly — unless it’s a schizophrenic shooting up a shopping mall.

Since the deinstitutionalization movement got under way in the 1970s, the mentally ill remain mentally ill, but now instead of living in warm, safe institutions, they live out on the streets, in homeless shelters and in soup kitchens, or drift back to their helpless families, occasionally showing up in “gun-free zones” to commit mass murder.

After the Virginia Tech shooting, an ABC poll showed that while Americans remained dubious about the effect of more gun control laws, 83 percent supported requiring states to provide information on the mentally ill for gun background checks.

Since then, the mentally deranged have continued committing mass shootings. There is still no way to prevent them from buying guns.

At the risk of joining the Republicans’ circular firing squad when we ought to be fighting Democrats, here’s how I think Republicans should be looking at things:

– Pushing amnesty for illegal aliens: 80 percent of Americans ferociously oppose you.

– Pointlessly opposing Obama’s Cabinet nominees: 99 percent of Americans need a constant supply of NoDoz just to listen.

– Staking out an Amnesty International position on a president’s hypothetical ability to use a drone against an “American citizen” (named Anwar al-Awlaki) about to launch a devastating terrorist attack on U.S. soil: 70 percent of Americans are against you.

– Opposing the Democrats’ idiotic proposals on gun control: 60-70 percent of Americans support you, but the other 30 to 40 percent will hate you because they want to “Do Something.”

– Proposing the involuntary commitment of dangerous psychotics and implementing measures to prevent them from obtaining guns: 83 percent of Americans support you and will be furious at Democrats for trying to undercut such laws.

Liberals can’t help themselves — they’re like Dr. Strangelove with the Nazi salute. The Democratic base will wail, “Who’s to say who is crazy? Maybe we’re the crazy ones!” and bleat about stigmatizing the mentally ill. Or, to quote Judge Sarokin, again: “(O)ne person’s hay fever is another person’s ambrosia.”

Your choice, Republicans: Take positions that will make you extremely popular, reduce mass murder in America and simultaneously reveal the insanity of the Democratic Party, or keep prattling about topics of interest to no one. Take all the time you need. 2014 is a whole year away.

Obama Furloughs FDA Inspectors; Keeps $100K First Family Dog Walker

Last Thursday, I received another startling communication from Jim Messina, Chairman of the President’s not-for profit social welfare group “Organizing for Action” (OFA). Apparently the looming sequester cuts had Mr. Messina and President Obama in a frenzied panic and they requested my signature on a petition (http://my.barackobama.com/Tell-the-GOP-to-Act) opposing the implementation of the cuts as well as a $25 dollar donation to Obama’s OFA, the “grassroots movement that will get the job done.”

To quote Mr. Messina from his anti-sequester e-mail:

“This has real consequences. On the chopping block are 10,000 teaching jobs, more than 70,000 kids’spots in Head Start, $35 million for local fire departments, $43 million to make sure seniors don’t go hungry, and access to nutrition assistance for 600,000 women and their families. That’s just a few of the things we’ll lose.” He adds: “all because they (Republicans) don’t want to close tax loopholes for millionaires, billionaires, vacation homes, and corporate jets. Seriously.”

As per White House instructions, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to begin releasing 1000 detained illegal aliens per week—remember these are serious felons—back into American communities. Public tours of the White House, given by volunteers, are now officially canceled, and FDA (Fish, Poultry and Meat) inspectors are set to be furloughed so that Americans are made to understand the severity of what Mr. Messina’s e-mail describes as “sledgehammer” cuts under the Republican caused sequester.

In a recent article by Alex Pappas at the “Daily Caller,” Pappas references “Presidential Perks Gone Royal” by Robert Gray. According to Pappas’ research, last year, the American taxpayer spent $1.4 billion to maintain and provide for the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by our nation’s First Family, which includes “everything from staffing, housing, flying, and entertaining President Obama, and the First Family.” Incidentally, that also includes regular transportation and entertaining of Mr. Messina and his grassroots group’s fundraisers at “Organizing for Action.”

White House occupants and guests also enjoy a 24-hour live-in movie projectionist (actually bunks at the White House just in case somebody wants to watch a movie on-demand) and $102,000 salaried Walker/Handler for the first family’s $1600 hypoallergenic dog, “Bo.” White House sources could not confirm if turd cleanup falls within the job description of a White House dog walker, but belly scratching is mandatory. Actually, it is possible Bo’s handler is a U.S. Secret Service Agent.

All U.S. Presidents in recent history have enjoyed creature comforts most Americans will never experience. What is truly astonishing is the rate of unregulated White House spending growth Obama has pursued since his first inauguration. At a time when America has record debt and deficits for entitlements supporting our nation’s unemployed and working poor; President Obama has increased White House staffing (Czars) by 50%, pays the highest wages in history, and runs around in Air Force 1 “with the frequency of a scheduled airline” all to campaign for public support of his vision for America.

Someone should remind Jim Messina that Air Force 1, the biggest and most expensive private luxury jet on the planet, costs 180,000 taxpayer dollars per hour to operate. Moreover, the Obama/Messina grassroots fundraising cartel, with IRS 501(c) (4) not-for profit status “Organizing for Action,” does not pay any taxes and is only required to reimburse the taxpayer the market value of a first class commercial ticket for certain un-official passengers.

In the City of Chicago, Obama’s hometown, starting pay for a teacher is $50,577, a rookie Fireman receives $31,000 in straight time pay, and a probationary cop gets $43,000 per year. Food Stamp benefits (SNAP) per individual recipient are $190 per month or $2280 per year. Recent reports suggest that government-funded daycare disguised as Pre-K education, what they like to call “Head start” is a complete waste of taxpayer “investment” and the program requires reform or elimination.

To this writer, every hour the President is out flying around the country, in our luxury jet, selling his class warfare rhetoric and playing golf, six fewer cops are preventing crimes, 3 teachers will not teach an Obama touted “Head start” class and 947 mothers or children will go without their monthly SNAP benefits in President Obama’s hometown. Yet somehow, the Obama State Department has promised the Muslim Brotherhood run Egyptian government foreign aid payments totaling $250 million dollars. Roughly, that translates to 5000 fewer teachers, 5813 less Police Officers protecting our neighborhoods and 8064 Firemen not available to respond to calls for help from Americans in need.

In summary, President Obama is a thief, a liar and a spoiled sore loser. If the minority and female voters in this country do not realize that this President is pimping them out like $2 whores they deserve everything they have coming when the weight of our crushing National Debt, and our insane Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing/money printing enterprise comes crashing down around the most corrupt and dishonest White House in U.S. history.

Should be interesting to see what the overpaid Obama suck-up Jim Messina will have to say about that in his next e-mail.

Homeland Security Drones Designed to Identify Civilians Carrying Guns

Recently uncovered government documents reveal that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) unmanned Predator B drone fleet has been custom designed to identify civilians carrying guns and track cell phone signals.

“I am very concerned that this technology will be used against law-abiding American firearms owners,” said founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, Alan Gottlieb. “This could violate Fourth Amendment rights as well as Second Amendment rights.”

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) obtained a partially redacted copy of Homeland Security’s drone requirements through a Freedom of Information Act request; CNET uncovered an unredacted copy.

Homeland Security design requirements specify that its Predator B drones “shall be capable of identifying a standing human being at night as likely armed or not” and must be equipped with “interception” systems capable of reading cell phone signals.

The first known domestic use of a drone to arrest a U.S. citizen occurred last year in the small town of Lakota, North Dakota when rancher Rodney Brossart was arrested for refusing to return six of his neighbor’s cows that had wandered on to his property. Critics say the fact that domestic drones are being used in such minor matters raises serious concerns about civil liberties and government overreach.

“That drone is not just picking up information on what’s happening at that specific scene, it’s picking up everything else that’s going on,” says drone expert and Brookings Institution senior fellow Peter Singer. “Basically it’s recording footage from a lot of different people that it didn’t have their approval to record footage.”

Others, like progressive author Naomi Wolf, have warned that domestic drones may soon be weaponized. The military version of the Predator B drone carries 100-pound Hellfire missiles, but the Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says the 10 drones in its domestic fleet are unarmed.

Last month, NBC News uncovered a confidential 16-page Justice Department memo that concluded the U.S. government may execute a drone strike on an American citizen it believes to be a “senior operational leader” of al-Qaeda or “an associated force.”

The Obama Administration defended the use of drones to kill Americans thought to be working with terrorists. “These strikes are legal, they are ethical, and they are wise,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney.
