Report: US, Ukraine Reach Mineral Rights, Security Deal

The Trump administration and Ukraine reportedly have reached a deal on mineral rights that could pave the way to a long-term security commitment to the war-torn nation in exchange for helping the U.S. recoup the billions of dollars in humanitarian and military aid it provided since Russia’s invasion three years ago.

Ukrainian officials said they are now ready to sign the agreement on jointly developing the nation’s mineral resources, including oil and natural gas, after the U.S. dropped demands for $500 billion in potential revenue from mining the resources, The Financial Times reported Tuesday.

Asked about a report that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was coming to the White House on Friday, President Donald Trump said this in remarks at the White House on Tuesday afternoon: “I hear that he’s coming on Friday, certainly it’s okay with me if he’d like to.”
“We’re saying look… we want to get that money back.”

During his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday, Trump indicated the deal was close to be completed and that Zelenskyy could visit Washington, D.C., this week or next to sign the deal.

Trump addressed the issue in a post on Truth Social on Monday after a virtual meeting involving the Group of Seven nations, writing in part, “I emphasized the importance of the vital ‘Critical Minerals and Rare-Earths Deal’ between the United States and Ukraine, which we hope will be signed very soon!’

“This deal, which is an ‘Economic Partnership,’ will ensure the American people recoup the Tens of Billions of Dollars and Military Equipment sent to Ukraine, while also helping Ukraine’s economy grow as this Brutal and Savage War comes to an end.”

The draft agreement, according to Axios, called for the establishment of a “Reconstruction Investment Fund” that will be co-managed by the U.S. and Ukraine. Axios reported Monday that the draft agreement it viewed was the most recent version, but it could still be amended. The agreement stipulated the fund will be designed to invest in projects in Ukraine and attract investments to increase development, including in areas like mining and ports. But it also suggests the U.S. will recoup some of its expenditures related to “defending, reconstructing, and returning Ukraine” to its pre-war gross domestic product.

Tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine have escalated in recent weeks, with Zelenskyy expressing frustration over the U.S. negotiating with Russia first on a deal to end the war, and Trump calling Zelenskyy a “dictator” for cancelling elections and blaming Kyiv for starting the war.

Newsmax reached out to the White House for comment.

The United States is sending an additional 300 troops to the Middle East with a focus on providing support in areas like explosive ordnance disposal and communications, the Pentagon said Tuesday. Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said the troops would be going from the United States but would not be in Israel.

“They are intended to support regional deterrence efforts and further bolster us force protection capabilities,” Ryder said.

He added that this month there have been 27 attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. military confirmed Tuesday that nuclear-armed North Korea had fired a ballistic missile, finding it posed no threat to North America and vowing to work closely with its regional allies. The move came after the reclusive state warned it will retaliate if the global community ramps up sanctions over its latest round of weapons tests.

“The clock has now run out, and all options are on the table,” a senior White House official told CNN, following the news.

“North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a written statement. “The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment.”

Ahead of a key visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Donald Trump had said the United States was prepared to go it alone in bringing Pyongyang to heel if China did not step in.

“U.S. Pacific Command is fully committed to working closely with our Republic of Korea and Japanese allies to maintain security,” the military command in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region said.

“The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America.”

PACOM said it determined the launch of the KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile took place at 11:42 am (2142 GMT), landing in the Sea of Japan at 11:51 am, in line with findings by the South Korean defense ministry. Pyongyang is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday Sprint and a new company, One Web, will add 8,000 jobs in the United States. During brief remarks from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., Trump spoke about the news to assembled reporters.

“I was just called by the head people at Sprint. They are going to be bringing 5,000 jobs back to the United States,” Trump said. “They are taking them from other countries. They are bringing them back to the United States.

“Also, One Web, a new company, is going to be hiring 3,000 people. That’s very exciting.”

Trump also recently announced an American job-creating deal with SoftBank Corp., which owns Sprint. Trump said Wednesday that SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son helped broker the deal regarding Sprint.

“A terrific guy. We appreciate it,” Trump said of him.

Mediaite captured video of Trump’s remarks.

On the eve of a meeting between Trump and business leaders of the tech industry earlier this month, IBM announced plans to hire 25,000 people in the U.S. and invest $1 billion over the next four years.
